Eco-Dome day 20 

December 8 Friday 7:00 PM 


After some unfortunate events, I moved on to create a better new improved Eco-Dome. Using the knowledge I learned before, I used the following materials: 


  • 3 plants with roots
  • Bottom of water bottle
  • Wooden box 
  • Chopped up apples
  • Cricket
  • Pebbles
  • 60 mL of water
  • One plant without roots
  • Sealable container


Some Changes 

I put some pebbles in the water just like my first one. I did this so my cricket can climb out of the water in case it fell into the water. I also had the dirt slope up on the water container to help the cricket access the water more easily. I added a rootless plant so the cricket can hang out underneath one of them. I noticed that other peoples crickets will always stay in the shade so I considered the idea of added little spots where my cricket can relax. I forgot to put in some stones so my Eco-Dome is “stoneless”

Nothing really interesting is going on with my Eco-Dome and I can’t make any predictions on what is going to happen.

Eco-Dome: Failed 

Today I opened my Eco-Dome and I was greeted with a dead cricket floating in the water container. All my plants were okay and were in good condition but, since my cricket died, I considered my 2nd rebuild a failure. I wonder why my cricket drowned its self.

Here are some observations I saw:

Observations of eco-dome:

  • Dead cricket in water
  • The water is clear yellowish color 
  • a new plant is sprouting 
  • All plants are healthy 
  • Food has been moved slightly 
  • No mold on food 
  • Heavily condensed water droplets on the walls
  • Cricket seems to have some kind of tear on its back
  • Strange little white create swimming and feeding around cricket

Why did my cricket die? 

I have a few theories of the death of my cricket.

  • Maybe my cricket was trying to drink from the container but it fell in and drowned. I thought the cricket would drink from the condensation on the walls but perhaps I was wrong. 
  • Parasites maybe? I noticed a little white worm-like creature swimming around the crickets corpse and eating off it. It was had to see so I could not really tell if it was a particle or a worm but I definitely saw it wriggling. I did some research on parasites and found out that some parasites force bugs to drown themselves. I also saw a tear in the crickets back so parasites could be a possibility. 
  • The cricket probably did not drown but died in there. Maybe the cricket just went into the water and died due to lack of oxygen or some other reason. Since some crickets live in swamps and by the river I doubt that crickets just die like that. Maybe it was my Eco-Dome and not the water. 

Even though my cricket died I had made some major accomplishments. There was a little plant spouting from the dirt. This shows that my Eco-Dome was perfect for plants and they were probably producing a lot of oxygen. The plants were so healthy that they dropped another seed or a seed was in the dirt and sprouted due to the healthy environment. There was also no mold on the food this time which means that the popsicle sticks worked! 

What I will do next time: 

  • Put the water container in the dirt so the cricket won’t drown 
  • Find the plants that were able to survive in the Eco-Dome 
  • Research on what is a more easy way for crickets to survive.

Eco-Dome Day 13

November 20th 5:16 

This is now my second Eco-Dome that I am constructing for my project.    

Here are the components that I used for my Eco-Dome. 


  • A big sealable container
  • A number of random plants that I found behind the HS gym 
  • 3 cut in half popsicle sticks 
  • Dirt 
  • Bottom of a water bottle 
  • 60ml of tap water 
  • stones 
  • Chopped up carrots and apples

 Some changes: 

I taped together some popsicle sticks and put food on them. I did this to prevent mold growing in my food. Last time I saw some mold all over the carrots and after some research, I found out that millions of mold spores are in the dirt and will activate if it finds food. I’m hoping that the popsicle sticks will block out the spores. I want to avoid mold because they take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. If too much mold is present, the cricket will suffocate

This time, I found plants with roots of them and made sure they are properly buried in the dirt. But when I came back to my Eco-Dome later, one of the plants where wilting. I fear that this Eco-Dome won’t be able to support plants.

Other Observations & Predictions 

I saw my cricket moving around and exploring its new environment during class. That show’s that my cricket is happy with its new Eco-dome. When I first put my cricket in the Eco-dome, I noticed that it went straight to the food. My cricket must have been hungry. I have a feeling that my cricket might overeat all the food because it was very hungry. Like I mentioned before, one of my plants were wilting when I put it in the Eco-dome. It worries me because it makes me think that my Eco-dome is not capable of keeping plants alive. (Though it may have been because I kept my plants out of the dirt for a while)  


Now it’s time to wait for our results…

Eco-Dome: Success

After leaving my Eco-Dome absent for 6 days, I opened my Eco-Dome and found out that my cricket lived! It was very still first, it did not move at all until it nudged it. I set my cricket free after that and considered myEco-Dome a success! I need to figure out what I did right and what I can improve on.

1st Rebuild

Observations of Eco-Dome:

  • Messier than before
  • Mold on the rotten food
  • One of my plants died
  • Cricket less active than before  
  • Water condensed on the sides of the Eco-Dome

Things I will do next time

  • Find a better container to fit my plants inside and to provide more sunlight with
  • Try to avoid the mold
  • Find better plants that produce more oxygen.

This is the first day of my Eco-dome project. What we are supposed to do is create an Eco-dome that can keep any number of crickets alive over the winter break.


  • How does the cricket get oxygen?

  • How do plants get the water they need?

A little update on our project

Personally, I don’t really think I achieved anything too personal.

The rest of the group did really good even though I did not really know what to do. We all had separate jobs and we finished different parts of the facade

Some challenges I faced were trying to figure what I should do. I had trouble finding out how I can help out because I did not know what to do next. Another challenge I faced was finding out a way to paint the trees because they were a ball of fluff that I had trouble painting.

Some last plans are to add more detail to the building. I feel that the facade lacks detail or any other 3D parts. This also solves my job problem as well.
