Day 24 and X+1

Observations of ecodome:

  • The numbers of plants : 2 survived . No water left in the plastic tray
  • The cricket died and buried into the soil. The soil was moist and and wet . The same situation that happened to the 2 previous ecodomes. Vaporization happened in the dome. Some of the leaves died , one of the leaves turned yellow. The twigs and the rocks remained the same position, and the there was no water in the plastic tray.
  • 1 small cricket died in the soil, next to the plants and under the twigs.

img_3115 The Dome before

According to the observations, the dome had the same affect ( vaporization) as the 2 previous dome. Vaporization happened when warm temperature affected the  dome inside. The twigs and the rocks were the same. The plants still lived , some leaves turned yellow. The some plants died due to lack of water and lacked of oxygen. The cricket died due to lacked of food source, oxygen and water.  On day 24, I observed the plants, the cricket and the container. I realized that the plant that I planted in my ecodome was the right type of plant for the cricket. The only problem with the ecodome was the container. From my observations, I noticed that the dome was too small for the plants, the twigs, rocks and the cricket to live.

After making three ecodomes, I realized that the type of plant, the temperature, and the crickets habit , and where it lived was very important to know:

Using a large container ( rectangle) shaped, for more space for the crickets. It also provides more oxygen. The placement of the ecodome is also important. Place the ecodome where there's sunlight to perform photosynthesis. Include lettuce, spinach as food for the crickets. Choose a strong ( adult ) cricket. Wet soil ( healthy soil ) for the plants to grow. Include rocks , branches as a place for crickets to chirp and jump. Include hiding places since crickets usually hide in the day time. Finally, make sure not to place the ecodome where there's direct sunlight, it will warm up the ecodome.

Here are the resources:

Ecodome 3

Ecodome design components like:

  • Good amount of soil that covered the bottom of the dome( keeping it the same as the previous dome) to avoid evaporation.
  • Dry type of soil, so that crickets won't be wet by water evaporation.
  • Lettuce and vegetables, because crickets prefer vegetables rather than other plants. 1 medium size lettuce and other small plants.
  • 2 crickets , in case one of the cricket lacks food, it could eat the other crickets ( Cannibalism)
  • Fair ( small- medium)  amount to fill water bottle cap so that the cricket won't drown into the water.
  • Leftover toilet paper rolls for the crickets to hide

1.This is the final page of letter K that me , Yumi and Sally ( from NY). On the page, I designed the key kettles , the kakapo. After that, I helped Yumi with the background coloring and together , we merged the animals , the verse and also the kettles onto our background.  In my opinion, the final page turned out amazing. I didn't expect that we could merge the pictures together and created an awesome scene of the Kakapos. For the background, I wanted to change the color grey to a lighter color or light grey, because I thought that the background was too dark, and made the scene look dull. For the verse, I wanted to increase the words from the verse so that people can actually read the verse clearly, but overall, I thought that the final page was beautiful. Sally ( from NY) helped us a lot.  She helped us with the verse design and drew a beautiful Kakapo for the research paper. She always replied with great ideas about the verse shared her opinions about our drawings ad designs.

2. After I finished the final page of the letter K, I was assigned to draw 2 animals for the research papers of Q and Z. These two pictures above were the queen trigger fish and the zebra. The zebra was the easiest since it needed less detail. I used a marker to trace my sketch and then colored the zebra. The queen trigger fish was more difficult than the zebra. I added a lot of different vibrant ,bright colors. Both of the drawings that I drew turned out okay. But I would try to improve both of my illustrations. I also merged the cover letter K with Yumi. We merged all of our Kakapo illustration onto a turquoise background.

3. For my publicity job, I designed the charity box. First, I hot glue the box and started on my design. Then I used red as a base color for my box. I wanted my charity box to have a unique design that is simple , so I drew 2 asian elephants ( endangered animal). After that, I wrote " Donate here for WWF " on the top of the box. My idea was , when people donate money, they could also write messages about endangered animals on the sticky notes. Finally, they could stick the sticky note onto the sides of the charity box.

4. When we skyped together as a whole class, we got to talk and communicate with another school. To me, the Skype conversation was amazing. Not only I could meet new friends, but we also asked questions , share ideas and had fun. I thought this was a great experience to actually talked and asked a lot of questions about the art collaboration and more.

5. screen-shot-2016-12-13-at-12-23-14-am

In my opinion, the final shop looks great. I think the the pictures, the illustrations are beautiful and arranged in an organized way. I love the dark background, it makes the illustrations, along with the book looks clean and professional . The only thing that I'm concern are the words on the book. " Endangermalia and before it's too late) can be in the middle of the book cover. But, I really liked the design of our final shop. I will use social media to promote our shop, and also, maybe I will make small posters of the book.

Debate Planning Doc

Statement : The battery had a more significant impact on shaping human life than the invention of the rocket.

Pro team: Thanh, Harry ( invention: Battery)

Con team: Sally, Hina ( invention: Rocket)

Reflection :

Radical Inventions DEBATE REFLECTION

  1. From the research, preparation and the debates themselves, what did you learn about the art of persuasion? Please explain.

During the research , the preparation of being the debater and experienced the debate was a challenge. As I progress in the research , I found out many websites that provided me with a lot of useful and unique informations that I could apply to my research notes. The big problem about gathering good and reliable informations is to brainstorm the gist of the whole research and then use the ideas that are persuasive and new to the audience, so that they would understand the advantage of the rocket ( the things that you want to persuade people). The art of persuasion is the most important technique in the debate. Everyone will use persuasion as a power for them to speak up the ideas that they want to express and debate their opponent. I used persuasion a lot during my debate between the rocket and the battery. Since I used persuasion as the key element for my debate, I controlled the tone of my voice to fit with the information, and situations when I debate. In the debate, I learnt that, in order to succeed the art of persuasion, I needed to use body language, the tone of the voice, even my own informations that would fit and answered the opponent’s side.

  1. How do you establish credibility as a debater? Explain fully.

Before debating, I made sure to have strong and reliable research notes and polished my claims, also the counterclaims. As a debater, the most important thing that I will never forget is to never give up on my ideas if I don’t have an answer for the opponent's question. I would fully explain my concepts and ideas to the audience as my main focus besides the disadvantage that the opponent’s side provide. I need polish my work after finishing, making improvements that I missed or what I don’t like in my debate. When speaking, I provide eye contact, hand gestures and tone of my voice to control the speech.

  1. What surprised you the most about your debate and/or the debate experience?

After debating, I realised that I used almost every technique that I wanted to express in my debate. Although my team didn’t win, but I had a lot of fun during debating and after debating. I noticed that I was special in my communication towards others. I did not realised that I was confident in my debate and I could actually embrace my claims to be more persuasive and to be more organize. During the debate, I was nervous, that I forget the majority of my claims. But overall, I really enjoyed the debate because it was a fun challenge that I studied and improve my speech for future debates.

  1. What were you most proud of in your own debate?

I had established the ideas of being the lead in my ideas and concept. Before and during the debate, I always shared my ideas with my partner and we both helped and supported each other’s ideas and improved each other’s debate. In the debate, corporation was one of my goals, and we succeeded that goal by answering and debating together. I was very proud of my team and how we connected our opinions to make a polished and amazing debate. In my debate, one of my goals was be confident, serious, also use the persuasion technique . I was very proud of my communication that led to a great way to speak and expressed the claims in an organized and polished way.

  1. What would be your next steps? Or in other words, what would you have done differently?

If I have more debates project in the future, I will have to be more organize and explained further in my evidence and counter claims. I really want to improve on my speaking skills. Not just the research notes, claims and evidence, but I also wanted to improve on my body language, tones of voice and my attitude towards the opponent’s ideas. I will never include opponent’s invention into my evidence and I would always try to fully understand my invention. I will research more, from my own invention to the opponent’s invention to notice all of the advantage and disadvantages.

[6. Additional Comments, Questions, Observations or Suggestions.]

I would like to know more on how to construct a strong debate.

Day 15

Observations of ecodome:

    • quantitative: 1 or 2 plants still survive, one cricket died, the amount of soil did not change.
    • qualitative: The dome had less plants, 1 or 2 survived in the dome. The dome had a weird smell of the soil and the water. Vaporization happened, the same situation that the first dome had. The soil became wet and the cricket died ( being buried into the soil)
  • survival: The cricket died in the soil. Majority of the plants and leaves died.

On day 15, the second was similar to the first. the same situation between the plants, the soil and both evaporated. The cricket died the same way as my first ecodome, it died on the soil, than it was buried into the soil, because it did not have enough space to breathe and lack of water. For the plants, the leaves had been eaten ( assumed by the bite marks of the cricket), but the majority of the plants died due to lack of carbon, and no roots to grow. The twigs remained the same position as the first. The soil was wet because evaporation occurred. I observed specifically the cricket and plants.

    • The type of cricket that I experimented with in the ecodome are house crickets. Since it's an omnivore Normally, they would prefer to eat fresh ( meat) by eating dead corpes from other insects. They do eat plants which are lettuce ( vegetables) in general.
    • Crickets live in moist, humid areas with an abundance of plants. They can often be found underneath rocks and plants, inside of logs and along roadsides. They are active in warm season's , which make it chirp louder.
    • The life span of the cricket only last a year, but in some cases, survive in a single winter

Ecodome 2

Ecodome design components:

  • Good amount of soil that covered the bottom of the dome( keeping it the same as the previous dome) to avoid evaporation.
  • Dry type of soil, so that the cricket won't be wet by water evaporation.
  • Plants from the school garden.
  • 1 cricket , because it will be the only cricket to get all the oxygen and food. ( avoid lack of food source and oxygen)
  • Fair ( small- medium)  amount to fill water bottle cap so that the cricket won't drown into the water.

 1. The biggest success that I accomplished when researching:

My topic of the research paper was about the 3 types of stress .In the research paper, my biggest success was the research note cards. In the process of gathering information, I was able to find many useful resources that supports my concepts and ideas of stress. Before I gather the information from different resources, I planned out from my research question " What are the three main types of stress the usually occurs when people have stress? ". From the question, I successfully planned out my three types of stress with many helpful resources. I felt confident in arranging different resources  together into a paragraph. Each type of stress were all gathered  website " Sweet search". I used all the websites and combine all the information to form my note cards. I end up with many reliable sources that helped me to write a research paper.

2. My biggest difficulty when researching:

In the research process, the hardest part of planning the ideas for the research paper is the research question. On the first day of the research paper, I was confused in creating my own question. I was struggling with the topic that I wanted to write about. After choosing stress, I didn't have any ideas that I can use into my question. I decided to research before I write my question.  Brittanica provided me with the three types of stress, and I thought of a new idea in my question. I decided to write and research about the three types of stress that usually occurs when people have stress.

3. My changes and what I do differently if I write a research paper on stress:

What I would do differently is the 3 body paragraphs. I would add more explanations and connecting sentences to the body paragraph. I want to improve the explanations because I used to much facts in my paragraphs. When I research, I would set a limit of not cards and information that I gather. It would be clearer because of the explanation support the facts that I researched about. Also, I needed to improve on the connecting sentences of the paragraphs, because my body paragraphs are separate in their own informations. For the introduction, I would change the thesis statement, to make it a stronger hook that persuade people to read my essay.

3 types of stress

Day 9 and 9 +1

Observations of day  9 ecodome:

On day 9 , the soil became wet due to the water that evaporated in the container. The plants were not able to survive without water and enough nutrients from the dirt. Also, I used a small amount of grass that I cut from the garden, so they could not live. I amount a few amount of leaves, but the leaves died. Both of the crickets died in the wet soil and grass.

According to the observation all of the living things in the plastic container died on day 9. The two crickets died in the soil, the grass that had been cut ,died. The two big leaves (food) for the crickets) died. And there was water evaporate on the sides of the container. For the ecodome experiment, I wanted to focus on the living things, specifically the crickets. I carefully measured the perfect amount of wet soil that I assumed that crickets live in wet soil , and provided a cave for the crickets. I made sure to be make my dome looked accurate as the environment that the crickets live. On day 9, I observed that the second cricket died, and before day 9, one cricket died.  The main reason that the crickets died was: lack of oxygen in the container, lack of food and the wet soil. Because of water evaporation, the soil absorbed the water and made a moist environment that the crickets could not live. The cut grass did not have roots , and the leaves to feed the crickets did not have any stems or roots to live.

First, the type of container to raise the crickets are, the rectangle boxes. They need to be large containers. Putting from 5 to 6 crickets cannot make the crickets last long. Add water by using cottons to absorb the water and place into a small plastic cup. For food, try using fish food for the specific type of crickets that we raise or rotting plant matter,. Add stones and wood for perching. Crickets live by hiding places, using egg cartons for them to hide. Finally, put sand in the bottom.

The most important element for all organisms is air, water, soil, wood and stones. With all this provided, we can create the environment for crickets to stay alive in a long time. Also, plants will need water to survive. The important thing that make the crickets increase their life span is to find out their habitat, food and their descriptions. The plants will provide food for the crickets, so it is important to keep the plants survive in a long time. Due to water evaporation, the crickets are provided with some water, but little amount of water can keep the crickets alive if we prepare in cups, and choose soil water few amount of water for the plants to live.

Video of Changes:

Ecodome design changes ( day 1 )

Ecodome design components like:

  • Dry type of soil and medium amount because the soil helps the plants to grow and provide a good and dry environment for the crickets.
  • 4 medium size plants( food) , so that the crickets can eat the leaves
  • Water spinach, because it's the type of leaves that the crickets usually eat.
  • 1 or 2 , to increase the crickets life span, the less the crickets, the more space the crickets have.
  • No water, because air is secured in the dome, there will be evaporation , so there is water already in the dome.

Day 1

Ecodome design components:

  • In my eco dome, I decide that the cricket will live in a medium size container, because it provided enough space and oxygen for it. I also choose to make small caves for the cricket because it lives in caves. Wet soil with plants , so that it creates an environment for the cricket. Crickets eat small plants and require more oxygen.
Changes made on design day:

  • In my dome design, I decided to add medium amount of grass and medium amount of wet soil. I didn’t add water to my dome and built caves in the dome for the crickets. I left my dome design the same.

1. When this task was introduced to you what were your first thoughts, reactions? Why?

When we were assigned to do a collaboration with our New York buddies, I was very exited. This was my first time in doing collaboration projects with other schools. At first, I thought it would be a small challenge, where we just needed to draw animals from books. But It turned out to be much interesting because, we didn't just draw and design animals, verses and backgrounds, we had online website to communicate our NY buddies and worked together to finish the 2 pages inspired by the book Animalia. Especially, I thought the concept of creating illustration inspired by other art works was very creative.

2. What are you excited the most about the collaboration unit?

In the collaboration unit, I am most excited most about the NY buddies. In the process of creating the scene, the characters, the verses, I am always surprise to see, as we are collaborating, they are very friendly and always support each others opinions. Although there are some difficulties communicating online, but they always reply and give ideas into the illustrations. Now, I am exited about how the groups can combine different details into one beautiful page of the animal illustrations, just like the book Animalia.

3. a) Explain how you have been connecting with your buddy?

At first, we decided as team to have the gist ideas ( the jobs ) that were required, assigned for each person: How we design the pages:
1. We can split pages , and work on the different session.
2. We can brainstorm on the sentence for our animal. We can also design the letter K together by sending images on Edmodo.
3. We can vote on the animal that we like to work on.

In the process of creating verses , we communicate with our buddy and brought 3 or more so that they can vote on the best verse. After the verse is done, we split jobs and work on portions. We take pictures of backgrounds, animal designs and comment on each other's opinions and arts.

    b) What is your buddy’s name and what did you learn about them?

My buddies's name is Sally. I learnt how she took responses and worked from them. She was great when she communicated often and gave ideas on how we should developed the verses. The first day of getting to meet Sally on think link, I was surprised on how she liked art, and we shared common interest in things that we like. Her drawings were amazing and creative. She had so many ideas to share and give great feed backs to my art works and I also commented back to her drawings as well.

    c) What similarities or differences did you notice between you and your buddy?

Despite of age difference and school, Sally and I were really similar in our interest. She wanted to become an artist or designer in the future, as well as I. She had pets , loved cartoons and liked to travel many places. In the process of working on the project, Sally had a unique mindset in verses and her drawings. He discovered, explored new things , as I saw in her designs. It was fun to work with someone who had the same interest and shared similar ideas.

4. How has (will) your drawing/learning been (be) effected because of the collaboration so far? (for example are you working differently because you are working with someone else?)

Collaborating with someone online was a difficult task. To me, it was hard to work alone on one portion without knowing what my NY partner did with the other portion of the illustration. Of course , everyone has a different style and level in their drawings, so it made it even more difficult to merge the whole picture together perfectly. That was why I had been changing my style of drawing to match with my partner's drawing and started to become worried about the result of the picture. As we progress into the drawings, it would be effected and may changed the final piece of the drawing. For example: change the animals to be more of a cartoon style , realistic style, maybe the animals needed to match with the background and verses so that the picture would match.

5.  a)What did you think about Graeme Base writing to us?

It was a great pleasure to be able to meet the artist who created the famous book: Animalia. To me, it was a big surprised, because this was the first time that I was able to communicate with Graeme Base to talk about the art works that he illustrated in every single pages of the book. When I thought of Graeme Base wrote us a letter, I was nervous if he answered my questions from my letter sent to him. I was really happy that he had answered some of my questions. It was a great chance to be able to ask a professional artist and asked about his life, his jobs and experiences of the artworks in the book.

     b) What did you learn from his letter?

I learnt how he had covered all of the questions in one letter. Not only that, he described in details of each of the pages of the animals, from the designing of the backgrounds , the characters of the animals and the genius verses that he created. From the letter , he described the order of the pages , the time that took him to do the pages and the experiences that he had from the book. As I read the letter, I recognized how he told an overall story of his family, his daily life, his common interest.

     c) Describe what you think of his book.

I think : Animalia is a unique book. Although many people think that it is for kids to read, but it had complex words from great verses. Also, the animals has so much details . By looking further into the designs of the book, there are different colors combine with a beautiful background that is distinct from other animal books. Animalia was a kingdom of animals that are uniques from the vibrant colors to the semi realistic/ cartoon style , that make the book become of the well known books. Looking at the verses , people who read the book can be able to identify the animals actions, along with the personalities of the animal.

6. What challenges have you faced so far?

In the progress of the NY collaboration, I completed the animal , along with the background design with my partners. The only challenge was the design of the verse that my NY buddy needed to work on , and the background colors. After all of the verse, animals and backgrounds are done, then we can start on merging different portions and complete with a printed illustration.

Conducting research, Triumphs, ChallengeS. For the research, it was the most important part of the whole project. In order to have inspiring ideas and unique details, requires more knowledge to research. For me, I was able to have all the information , and worked together with Sue when I was out of ideas. Some of the notes were harder than other motes, but we were able to find all the main ideas from more than 7 articles online. I thought when I succeeded in doing the research notes was when I found the information based on a lot of passages and merged the information and researches into one best research note. What I learnt about myself when I had to take notes.

I learnt about connecting ideas and merging the different ideas to create the research note. I also learnt that it was hard to manage each research notes, brought all the main information and took out the extra details. Research notes needed to be edited and be correct before it was used to write the passages. But, I experienced a lot during the research notes because it increase my creativity , and it helped me gain more more confidence in brainstorming my ideas that I need to write in the paragraphs.

What insights did I gain about narrative hooks that I may not have been so aware of before:

Narrative hooks were the essential to my paragraphs , because I thought that it was the spirit of the paragraph, even though it was in a short paragraph. After the revolutionary thinkers project, I realized that, I improved a lot based on my writing with my hooks that caught the reader's attention, because narrative hooks allowed me to expressed my creativity. Narrative hooks would be very useful and using its strategies can bring the paragraphs to the next level. From all of my paragraphs, not a single paragraph would miss narrative hooks.

What narrative hooks did I experiment with in my writing:

I used the narrative hooks to create curiosity about a person to the audiences

I used the show don’t tell hooks to describe an event

I used poetic words into my paragraphs to make my paragraph smooth and flow

I used special adverbs like: Tragically, However….

I used more adjectives to describe a person.

discoveries that I  encounter as I was vloggingI found that it was best to speak natural more than reading from what I write in the reflection. Because, it made it more interesting for the audience, it sounded like a conversation between a speaker and listeners. Confidence was the key to the vlog. We have to express ourselves with existing ways to catch the listener's attention.  Using music that suited with the reflection or scene to make the audience felt the scene that we were describing. Body language and tone of voice  would further described the actions of the character in the scene. 2 Historical Narrative Paragraphs VLOG

MY BIGGEST TAKEAWAY (BIGGEST LEARNING) from the Revolutionary Thinker’s Project

I learnt that doing such a big project, especially on the Revolutionary Thinkers requires a lot of critical thinking and creativity. I learnt that paragraphs needed to be edited and polished. I thought that note taking was essential in this project because it provided main ideas and good research for me to write narrative passages. One of the most interesting experiments that helped me to edit my paragraph was the vlogs. It required me to speak and read the paragraph out loud. I thought this was one of the new ways to improve my paragraph because it gave me the idea to edit my paragraph.

In math class, we were assigned to do the math recording of the the topics on Aleks. In the video, to make my explanation clear, I used my notes to make it easier to understand.  I did 3 topics, each topic had 3 problems. The most challenging part of the video, was to make sure to be quick and clear. But, ovarial, I enjoyed the video a lot and  I had experienced many things while recording. I learned from my own mistakes and I would improve more in future projects that requires recording.3 topics on .
