Positive and Negative space

In art we had to make a positive and negative space art piece. I chose a picture of a dog and a cat because those are some of my favourite animals. I chose the colours black and white because i wanted the dog to look like a dalmatian.  It was hard to cut out the cat because of how small it is. But finally i finished my positive and negative space art piece.

Cat Tien

Recently grade 5 went to a trip to Cat Tien.  There were good and bad parts of the trip. 

My favourite part of Cat Tien was visiting the seeing the moon bears.  I liked seeing the moon bears trying to find the food. I noticed a lot of things like most of the bears preferred  the peanut butter.

The most interesting thing, for me was when I saw the gibbons. Most gibbons like to stay high up in the trees but 1 gibbon went down to were the SSIS students were sitting. However I didn’t get to see the gibbon for too long before we had to leave.

The hardest part was getting out of my comfort zone. Usually i don’t go out to the forest a lot but the trip to Cat Tien opened my mind about the forest.

Next year i would give the kids more marshmallow because after the bonfire there were still a lot of marshmallows

Long walk to water reflection

Today we did a long walk to water. Basically we had to walk to this river and do a bunch of  water activities.

Activity 1: We hadto carry jugs ofwater on our heads or we could hold them in our hands.                                                                                       

Activity2: We had to carry water on our shoulders.                        

Activity 3: We had to try separate the dirty stuff from the water.

Activity 4: We tried to get buckets of water from the river.

The most challenging activity for me was separating the dirty stuff from the water. It was difficult because we didn’t know what to do and we didn’t have many materials.

We dealt  with the challenge by trying different ways such as leaves, rocks, gravel… My team failed at making the water clean but at least we tried our best.

I think the teachers could make this trip better by not making the kids carry a lot of water, because a lot of students complained about their shoulders hurting.

Drawing reflection


This is my drawing. I didn’t have enough time to finish.

For this unit my goal was to draw an animal using shading.  I learned how to shade using a B and H pencils. I want to improve on knowing where the light comes from because i don’t think i am very good at it. I think my shading skills got better because i can now kind of shade in color. I liked drawing the turtle because i was bad at drawing animals and shading at first but now i am much better. Even though i got better there is still room for improvement.

My Bu Long Trip

Hello everyone!

On Monday, half of fifth grade went to Bu Long. It took 1 hour and 30 minutes to get there. As you can tell it was quite a long trip.

When we got there, we put our bags away and then we did a trust fall test. The trust and fall is basically when you fall and you have to trust someone to catch you.  Then we put our harnesses on.

After that we separated into three groups. My group started off with rock climbing. We were attached to ropes and we had to climb up  a rock wall.  Most people didn’t make it up to the top, but it’s understandable because it is really hard to get all the way up.

Then we went zip lining. On my way to the zip line place, my leg slipped into a hole. Luckily i was okay. The zip line was  fun, but it had quite a hard landing.

The last activity my group did was abseiling. For those of you who don’t know what abseiling is, abseiling is when you are attached to ropes and you have to climb down a cliff.  First we did a practice on a small rock. Then we actually abseiled down the cliff.

My favorite activity was zip lining.

The most challenging activity was definitely the rock climbing because my fingers hurt a lot while doing it.

I learnt that I am not afraid to try new things. I think this trip helped me pursue excellence because I had to face my fear and also support others.

20 Hour project

Hello world

The 20 hour project is a project that 5 grade is working on. We have to practice a skill or develop a new skill. My 20 hour hour project is trying to play the ukulele.

It is going ok so far. I finished 2 hours of my plan last week and i plan to finish 4 hours of my plan this week. While playing the ukulele i had problems with tuning it because i just couldn’t get the right tune. It also hurt my fingers because i had to press on the string. When i played the notes it sounded ok. It could use some work but i only just started so…

Hour 1: Keep practicing simple notes

Hour 2: Practice  playing the notes smoothly

Hour 3: Tune and learn some of the notes from the song

Hour 4: Try playing the notes quicker and learn more notes

Hour 5: Practice moving my fingers from string to string quicker

Hour 6: Learn the whole beginning of the song

Hour 7: Practice playing the beginning nicely and practice a bit of the middle.

Edmodo is a website were our teacher post homework and we also sometimes do homework on there.

I think the good thing about Edmodo is you can chat to your classmates so you can tell them your ideas and what you think.

I think the good thing about Edmodo is if you forget what your homework is you can go on Edmodo and check.

I think Edmodo is not so good because a lot of the times when doing homework on edmodo is difficult because of WIFI problems.

I think biblionasium is good because our teacher can see what you are reading.

I think biblionasium is good because you can suggest books to people and everyone else can also suggest books for you to read.

I think biblionasium is bad because you don’t actually get to read the book on the website.

The Design Cycle

This is the design cycle.

One of the times i went through the design cycle was when i was trying to draw a 3d 1 point perspective drawing. First i imagined how the picture was going to look. Then i planed in my mind where the vanishing point was going to be. After that i started doing light sketches of where i wanted certain objects to be. Then i started actually drawing and making the lines darker. At the end i evaluated by thinking how i could make my drawing better.

Reflection On Poor Pong

Backward-LookingWhat problems did you encounter while you were working on this challenge? How did you solve them?

At first my team had a problem with how to secure Pong onto the washers. We fixed the problem by using a straw to secure Pong to the washers.

Inward-LookingWhat was satisfying to you or frustrating to you during the challenge?

The part that was satisfying  was at the end our product worked.

Outward-LookingIn what ways did your product meet or not meet the goals of the challenge?

My team,s product met the goal by sliding through the zip line.

I would use only 1 or 2 washers instead of using all four of them.

Feelings: What were some of the different feelings you experienced during the challenge?

I felt happy at the end because our product was able to bring Pong to the other side.
