Mandalas Art Reflection

In art we have been working and researching about mandalas. We collaborated with the local school to teach a technique we learned and practiced and learned a technique from the local school art students. The task of this unit was to learn different techniques of mandalas and chose one and do the final piece. (or a combination of techniques) I feel really proud now because I now know more about mandalas and different ways to create a mandala. I also feel confident since we taught the local school and they seemed to understand and had a lot of fun.

What are mandalas used for?

Mandalas are used in a lot of spiritual traditions all around the world.

What was the purpose of mandalas in the old days?

The purpose of mandalas in the old days were used as a basic symbol for concentration and meditation, personal maturity, and protection and healing.

What is the definition of mandalas?

A geometric figure representing the universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism. (Google)

Something that was challenging was trying to make in symmetrical since we had to draw the patterns by hand without being able to trace like technique 1. I feel like I did a pretty good job on my mandala and it was an amazing experience to mix with the students there and get to learn more about mandalas while learning more about the students and their school. They were good teachers but sometimes they hard a hard time trying to find a word. I think they were good teachers since I understood clearly how to do it and now I feel confident at this technique.

The technique we used at the local school was technique 2. We drew 3 perfect circles like the ones in the picture above. And drew it as symmetrically as we could.

Picture of mandalas for technique 2 above.

When the local school came we taught them our way of creating a mandala, which was by folding it in 4 parts and created a pattern on 1/4 of the part and then folded it in half and used a tool to make the pencil marks to show on the other side which would be the outline to help you make it look more symmetrical. The mandala on the top, in the picture above, is the one I used to learn and the one below is the one I worked on with the local school to show them how to create it with the technique we used.

I feel like I am going to use a combination of the 2nd and 3rd technique. Which the 2nd technique was the one we taught to the local school and the 3rd one was from watching a video. I feel like doing a combination of the 2nd and 3rd technique because I feel the most confident with those two and I feel like they make a good combination. I am looking forward to the final piece of my mandala and the theme. I highly want to meet again with the local school because it was cool teaching other students and getting to work with people from the other school.

I learned several things while completing the final mandala. I have learned firstly how to color contrast. Something that I am proud of is my patterns. I think I did a good job in using a lot of patterns that has a connection to the city since our theme was the city. If I got to do this project again I think I would make it simpler since it is taking more time than I think it would’ve taken. I honestly think that the other school student’s would like the parts that include their drawing while our school student’s would like the detailed one since we spent a lot of time and is very different from the other’s. I would actually really want to see the local students combining and redesigning our work with theirs. I think that it would be really different and really interesting to see. An element I would use for my own mandala is the bridge.

Art Stop Motion Videos and Reflection

I would rate the first one 8/10 because I really enjoyed that the video was really smooth. I think that they did a good job at this because he took the time and took a lot of pictures. For the second video I would give it a 9/10 because I really enjoyed how everything was so creative and when you first see it, you know what is what. For example, you could clearly see that the sticky notes was butter since they are both yellow and then the person uses a butterknife. I really liked the last one because they recreated the games with different kinds of material. I found this really cool and I would give it a 9.2/10 because I really also liked how they put in the sound effects.

Wire Sculpture Reflection

We have been working on wire sculptures for this project.

What do you think of your sculpture overall?

I am pretty proud of my work overall and I feel like I was really successful.

What things are you happiest with? Why?

I am really happy with my background, I feel like it blended really well. I also really like my patterns, I like how it is really original.

How did the colours turn out? Would you use different ones next time?

I really like how the colors turned out. I would not change the color if I could next time because I think the colors turned out pretty well and the sponge effect made it look more cool.

Did you discover any new paint techniques?

Yes, I have discovered to use sponges which is pretty much how I painted my background. I have also discovered and used the flicking paint technique, I really like this technique because it makes it look really cool and I figured I would use white which I did because it matched my background better.

Could you have planned more or were you properly prepared when you started to paint?

Yes, I feel like I didn’t have a lot planned but it turned out pretty well.

For a future class what do you think they could use as a theme? For example, they could represent music.

I think a cool theme for a future class would be cubism, represent music, realism, or abstract. Also I think a cool theme would be galaxy.

Did you enjoy this task? Why? Why not?

I have really enjoyed this task because we got to use paint, and I personally really like making sculptures, which is why I really enjoyed this task.

Do you prefer using Comic book/ Pic Collage/ Life Cards to show your development?

I prefer comic book and pic collage. I like using comic book because we can use different kinds of effects. I also like pic collage because it is very simple to show the process. I also like how there are a lot of stickers.

Animal Pastel Eyes Evaluation, and Book Creator

The topic we have been working on was  realistic animal eye drawing. I learned how to blend colors together better and that I should use black and the darker colors last because it is likely to smudge. The task was to do a first draft on a white piece of paper then for the final piece we were supposed to recreate the animal eye on the bigger piece of paper which was colored.

During the process of doing the final drawing we were supposed to grid the paper and the black and white picture of the animal eye because we wanted the eye to be where it is in the picture and get the drawing as closely as we can get it to look similar. This was to make it realistic.

I first drew my eye on a piece of paper lightly and then chose the pastels that were similar to the picture of the eye. I did this by bringing the laminated colored picture of my eye to the table which had the pastels and compared the color of the pastels to my picture. I developed my skills on drawing the fur by practicing in multiple times at home.

The process of drawing the final one was harder than I thought because the paper was larger than I expected. During the process of finishing our first piece we had went around and each person gave one a good thing they think the person did and a thing that they can work on. I am pretty proud of my final piece because the fur turned out better than the first piece and the eye was more realistic.

A improvement I could have made was to erase the grid after I knew what to do because the first time I think I was finished but I could see the grid so I had to do a second layer, and kind of a third layer. I have learned several things from my teacher’s feedback. But I think the feedback that was most helpful was when she told me I should look at the fur’s direction more clearly. And she was right.

I realized in my first piece I had not drawn the fur the correct direction. So for the final piece I had tried really hard to get the fur the perfect direction. I had also had great feedbacks from my peers they had really helped me to tell me that I should use a this color instead of that one so I had used the color that they had suggested and it really had made a difference.

I learned a lot of things during this project. But one thing that I have learned the most was that how to shade it and tone it. I learned this by the art assistant teacher telling me how to and my friends helping me by teaching me. This will help me in the future because I personally, really liked this project and I think I will definitely do it in the future.

These skills will help me in other areas of my life, this will help me when I go to college because I am planning on going to an art college, and if I don’t I am still definitely going to paint and draw. And because I loved this project so much I am pretty sure I will definitely need these skills for me to be a better artist in general.

Name Sculpture

A name sculpture is making a sculpture out of your name. Cutting out each letter in your name and making it as a sculpture. Our first task was to draw out our names in bubble, box, or graffiti, then cut them out. Over all I am really satisfied with my work because I spent a lot of time in cutting and decorating the letters and especially the base. Overall I am pretty pleased with my work. We were required to use emphasis, movement, contrast, texture, and focal point in our letters. It also has to look interesting in every angle. I am really happy by the balance of my letters because I put in a lot of thinking in to the balancing part. Another strength is the design of my letters because I tried to make every single one unique in their own way. Finally, I am also impressed with how it looks in all different angles because I spent a lot of time trying to make it look interesting from every angle. Next time I would change by looking at more examples because if I did I think it would have looked much cooler by the designs and the positioning even though I am happy with my work I feel like I could do much better. If I was to do this task again I would the size of my letters to be exactly the same because my letter ‘y’s are smaller than the rest. I faced a challenge which was arranging my letters because some of them won’t stay in place. I found cutting the letters easy since I had experience in this part. Overall I really enjoyed this task but I find that the slots are hard to make because you have to make it long enough for the other letter to fit in but if your letters are too small the letter might tear apart, however decorating the letters were easy for me.
