On my resume, I wrote a lot of qualities that would be helpful if I did have a career at the Nike World Headquarters. However, I think my best professional quality is communication and time management for both my school and personal life. I'm in 8th grade now and I have had a lot of time to reflect on what makes me a good student. I've had time to know what I need to work on, but also what I'm good at which helps me to be successful at school. Throughout my Middle School years, I have experienced a lot of things that have helped me grow as a student/person. One thing that I feel that makes me a good student is my time management. I discovered that you really have to know how to manage your time well, whether it's between family, friends, sports, and academics. The key is to have a balanced life. While it is true that focusing on the academic side of your life 24/7 will help you in the future, you also need to know how to distribute your time among other things such as your family, social life, and athletic life. I have learned that if you're going to succeed, you really need a balanced life. I've participated over 3 sports throughout my Middle School year and trust me, I have had a difficult time managing my time with it. But as a 'professional' quality I have of being a good student, I am able to organise my time and plan out my schedule ahead of time to avoid stress in the future. Another quality I have that helps me through my school life is my communication. You will find that during middle school, you will have to be flexible and be okay with changes of plans. Usually, you will also have to communicate with your teachers to let them know your situation. You are responsible for your own things. Getting in contact with your teachers at school often (for clarifying things, asking questions, etc.) will help you understand better. If you need help, ask!

While there may be some good things about my professional qualities as a student, there are also some things I need to work on. Something I feel that I need to work on is problem solving and figuring out things on my own. There is always help that you can get from your teachers, peers, and your parents, but you need to learn how to be independent. I have depended a lot on my friends to show me how to do a variety of things, but I think that sometimes, it's good to back away and learn on your own. I have improved on this as I progressed through Middle School, but I think that I should only ask for others to help me when it's in desperate need. Also, I need to focus more on what I'm trying to accomplish (like doing homework). I need to realise that the faster I finish my homework, the more time I will have to do what I want to do. I get distracted very easily because I have access to a lot of other things, but also because I'm not in a good environment when I'm trying to get my homework done. Maybe I should be in a more quiet space because then, I won't have any distractions.

This persuasive writing unit really expanded my knowledge on how to use persuasive techniques to convince readers of an opinion. A challenge I stumbled upon is that I need to make sure I include links to every single source I include in my writing. I am aware that plagiarism is a big concern that writers usually have when publishing their work online, so I made sure that when I submitted my piece online, I included the links to my sources. Something I did well was choosing powerful word choices to help persuade my readers. Picking the right word choice is a good persuasive technique and I should keep that in mind for future persuasive writing. I think that you should take your time to produce a well written persuasive writing because when you receive an email from the website you publish to, it feels like you've been accepted into college. We should work our best on our writing because it's all worth it after you get published and maybe even receive an award. This is my first experience in being a published writer and hopefully in the future, I will be able to continue with this. Here is my writing on TeenInk

In this PE unit, we were assigned to create a dish that follows the healthy food guide. My group created a dish that contained vegetables, protein, oils/fats, dairy, and grains. In the book, there are pages explaining the dish, pictures of the dish, and videos of when we presented the food to our judges. Personally, I would eat this dish and call it a healthy dish because it contained everything that would meet the healthy standards.

Another unit has come in Mandarin class and this time it was learning about different Occupations. We had gone through this briefly before, but in this unit, Penny and I had to create a video of an interview for applying for a certain job. Penny's character is interviewing my character who is applying for a  job as a waitress.

I learned plenty from this unit from things to vocabulary and editing videos and writing a whole script of Mandarin. I learned the vocabulary for different occupations such as 律师 (lawyer), 教授 (Professor), 画家 (Painter), etc. The most difficult part of this project was probably writing the script. I had a hard time doing this because when I was writing it, I had to include things in the script such as their name, nationality, describing the job, why they want the job, their previous jobs, etc. There was vocabulary given that helped me with creating the sentences. Some sentences were 你以前的工作是什么?Where did you work previously? 你为什么要申请这份工作?Why do you want to apply for this job? I also really enjoyed learning how to edit the video. (below)

I learned all of this by just practicing. Quizlet really helped me because I just kept using the flashcards and playing the games and that helped me memorise the vocabulary. Penny and I had to practice our script so we could say it fluently and then finally put that in the video.

Lecture style:

In the chemistry unit, we did more of a lecture style environment. Most of the class, the teacher would talk and teach us the things we needed to learn and then once in a while, there would be a lab. I felt like I learned much more this way because there was always a slideshow that he would put up on the screen to show us diagrams, definitions, pictures, etc. This was obviously an advantage for me because since I'm a visual learner, it really allowed me to learn things much quicker. Some disadvantages were that we didn't have time to ourselves to learn and most of the class was him explaining and teaching us the material we needed to learn. Something I liked to improve for next time was just maybe having more labs so students will be able to actually see what were learning and how it happens in real life. We created a common craft video to show our knowledge on what we learned and I really liked the fact that we got to do a project on our own instead of being taught by all the time.

Independent Learning:

This was one of the hardest topics for me to learn and the fact that I had to learn independently made it even more difficult. However, I really liked that students were each given an entire document  with resources that would help us learn and there was a worksheet that we were able to fill out with our knowledge from the sources. There was also quizzes that were made so after learning about each topic and jotting down notes, we would take the quiz and test our knowledge. I really liked that we also had a 'What I Got Wrong' document, helping each of us record what we needed to learn more of. The greatest advantage of this learning style was the fact that we got to use our documents during quizzes. I really enjoyed this because if you didn't do your class/homework then you wouldn't have all the information and notes that you needed for the quizzes. Down below is an example of what the documents look like. I had to fill out questions and sometimes I would have to create diagrams (like the one below of the food web) On the big document that everyone got, there was a calendar which I really found useful and I felt like with this, I could manage my time much more efficiently.

Next time, I feel like an improvement would be if the teacher could explain and elaborate on more things instead of having everyone work on their own. Sometimes, maybe it would be helpful to teach the class important things we needed to know.

Half and Half:

This learning style is the best one yet. There is a balanced amount of time for the teacher to teach and for the students to do their own work. Throughout the teaching time for the teacher, he would create a slideshow to project up on the board and taught us the material we needed to know. After that, we would be shared google docs, which we would fill out with things we learned from that teaching time. This learning style also has quick experiments that are done in class to demonstrate what were learning. An advantage for this learning style  is that there is an equal amount of time for learning from the teacher and learning by yourself. A disadvantage is that there are two different topics going on at the same time. For example, in this unit, were learning about climate change (which is taught by the teacher for half of the class). But then after that, we have to switch to working on our documentaries which is still about climate change, but it doesn't really help us focus just on that. Right now, it's not a big problem for me and doesn't both me too much, but I feel like were not focusing on the big topic of Climate Change. 

What are your academic, social, and personal goals for the rest of the year?

For an academic goal, I always try my best to get straight A's. This is a realistic goal for me because for last semester I got straight A's and this semester I want to do the same. I would also like to focus more on my homework and assignments than I usually do because I tend to get distracted when it comes to homework. I obviously always finish it, but I would like to take the time to just focus only o my homework and assignments instead of switching back and forth to procrastinating and doing homework. It seems like I can always handle it and finish my homework on time, but I think that it's a good idea for me to just finish my homework and then after it's all done, I would be able to do what I want to do.

A social goal I have for myself is to participate in more bake sales and charity fund-raising events. I haven't had the chance to do this yet because I don't think I've ever had the time to. The last sport before the end of the year is volleyball and since I have already gone to one MRISA this year, which was basketball, I am going to have to figure out a way to raise my own money to send me to Hanoi for volleyball MRISA. I have talked to my friends about this and I think we can make it work, but we just have to start raising money soon or we're not going to have enough time. I think this would be a great opportunity to do a bake sale or yard sale because it could easily raise some cash to send a group of us to compete in the 2016 Volleyball MRISA in Hanoi. I hope we can take action in this soon.

Last but not least, a personal goal I have for myself is to go walk outside more and appreciate the outdoors. Yes, I am very athletic, but that doesn't mean that I go outside on my own time and exercise. I would love to maybe skateboard outside and enjoy it while I can when I'm on my free time. Maybe walk my dog, Bingo, a little more. My dad has always asked me to go running/walking early in the morning on weekends, but I have always said no to that because I love to sleep in. Maybe once every other week, I'll wake up early to go walking outside. Yes, I love my sleep, but I also love exercising so I will consider it now. Even if I don't wake up for morning walks/runs, I can always do that at night after dinner where its much cooler. Not only will this help me stay healthy and in shape, but it'll allow me to spend time with my family and enjoy the outdoors.

In this art class unit,  each student is given a wooden chair and with that, they are required to create a sculpture using that chair. Using their brainstorming ideas/themes, they will choose their final idea and put that into their construction of making their sculpture. This task really helps myself think outside the box and what I can do with a simple wooden chair.

Each student had to think of themes that they could possibly use for their chair sculpture. My top three themes I chose was A city/town, the nature, and heaven and hell. A chose a city/town because I want something based on NYC because everything is so lively and bright and I want to cooperate that into my sculpture. I chose nature because I thought that I could find tree bark, leaves, and other nature objects outdoors that I could put on my sculpture. Last but not least, heaven and hell because I wanted to do half and half of two opposite things. I was thinking for this design I would have a good and bad. On the bottom of the chair would obviously be the bad one and on the top would be like the fairytale like one.

This is the design process that we are using for this project.

My favourite idea so far is probably the city. I think its really cool because I can do so many things with buildings and the city. I think that it allows me to be free with my artwork. The city can also be a very busy place and I like that and I think it'll use that as a benefit.


Additive Sculpture:


This is an example of an additive sculpture because its a telephone which a lobster is added to it for the artwork of the sculpture.

Subtractive Sculpture:


This is an example of a Subtractive Sculpture because pieces of the sculpture have been taken away to form holes in that creation.

Kinetic Sculpture:


This is a Kinetic Sculpture because it moves possibly from the wind and that's the effect of this sculpture.
