3rd November News Folio: Hand sanitizer: How it protects you

Summary

Sanitizer is a good solution when the soap or water isn’t available. Hand sanitizer is ubiquitous after the H1N1 virus and bacteria showed. The experts say that the ones with alcohol do protect H1N1 flu. When you use alcohol hand sanitizer, the virus becomes deactivated. We need to wash our hand frequently, because 80 percent of all infections get spread by hands. However, if you miss a spot between your fingers, then you will have possibilities of infection. The experts suggest that, when you clean your hand, the sanitizer works against these viruses almost immediately. But even though there is sanitizer, cleaning your hands with soap and water is better. But experts say that people don’t clean their hand much, so the sanitizers are invented.

 Personal Reflection

             I see many sanitizers in the school and my home because my home is hospital. In my house, my father always reminds about the importance of having clean hands. So I always wash my hands after I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. I strongly agree about washing hands frequently, because the virus H1N1 is always near us, and you can get the diseases, and go to situation of dying. You won’t be willing to end your life with H1N1 disease (I know for sure). So I think the hand sanitizer is very useful to deactivate some diseases. But I don’t want to think about how many years we still need to use hand sanitizer to protect ourselves from diseases. I feel sad about inventions like this, because it is something that we didn’t needed.

2nd November News Folio: Most ‘orphans’ have a living parent, says charity

Summary

             A leading charity says that 80% of orphanages around the world have a living parent. Most of the children are put at the risk by living in an institutions, and beatings. People are saying that we should take care of the children, and start to find the kids because caring the orphanages is a big business for people. Even though there are many orphanages in the world, there are some many other orphanages that are not reported. But the reason why parents give up their child is because simply they can’t afford to feed, clothes, and other basic needs.

             There is one global issue, especially in Africa and Eastern Europe, which the number of the orphanages has multiplied tenfold. And most of them are sharing a single bed or sleeping in a dirty floor. The children with poverty are getting effects of HIV and Aids, and more violence. And there have to me some treatment for this question.

 Personal Reflection

             Because I learned about the Millennium Development Goals, I knew that there were many orphanages that are in the poverty. But I never knew that the number of the orphanages always increases, and there will be no way to solve this problem if everybody just abandons all of the children. As I mentioned, we really need some treatment for this problem, because even now, people cannot solve this problem already, because the problem became to big to solve with little help. But even though people knew that the orphanages were a main problem, they didn’t gave any help or solution to it because people who are not in poverty don’t really know about the situation of people who are actually in the poverty. If we don’t give any help, then you will be only able to see thousands and thousands of orphanages in 10 years. Do you want to just leave them?

1st November News folio: Elevated Pollution Levels near Regional Airports

Summary

             Scientists found out the evidences of air pollution in the major airports, and now people who live near the airports are concerned about their health because they could be harmful. Because airports are the main transportation on air since few years ago, people still uses airplanes even though the carbon emission is happening seriously. People are just saying that we should give closer attention to these emissions, so the impact will get lesser. The main impact on air quality is because of fuel burning during landings. This impact includes many health problems, but the researchers don’t know many things about the health problems yet. Scientists found that emissions also called as ultra fine particles, and it is very significant in pollution levels which give very high impact.

 Personal Reflection

             Because I had WWW trips, I took four times to go from Vietnam to Singapore and comeback to Vietnam. After I read this article, I was kept thinking about the amounts of carbon emission that we did while there is 4 times of landing. I knew that I didn’t really care much about carbon emission, because I don’t really know about carbon emission very well. However, the scientists are saying that it gives impacts on your health, too. Then should we take airplane? Even though the pollutions and health problems are going on?

Millennium Development Goals video

In geography class, we discussed about the millennium development goals (MDGs). We mostly talked about ideas that we could contribute and achieve the millennium develop goals. By making this video, I could understand better about the millennium development goals. We made a Xtranormal video in interview form, such as conversation, which tells about the information that you should know about millennium development goals and what do we need to do if we want to achieve the goals.

There were some differences between writing about the idea and expressing the ideas by using tools like Xtranormal. May be expressing the ideas by using tools like Xtranormal is more creative and more attractive, because it gives emotion. But however, writing will give more specific informations about the idea.  In my point of view, making video is better than writing, because it is more attractive, even easier to understand. So I suggest use Xtranormal to make a video to express the ideas. I not meaning that writing is bad. They both have advantages and disadvantages. So I think the choice is all on the person who do the project.

Reflection on BotNet

In our ICT class, we watched a video about the impacts of Bot Nets. This video was all about impacts of Bot Nets, the demonstration of how does spam works, the direct malicious attack on the website, and how to detect from the spams and attacks. This video was made by BBC production, Click.

When the spam messages com from the Bot Nets, sometimes it takes down a website. But the computer appears normal. Because there are more online people right now, there is more possibility to get infected from the viruses. When the internet was first introduced, it was signal with telephone. But now internet is almost wireless, so everybody could use it everywhere.

This video demonstrated about sending spam by Bot Nets. When the controller of Bot Nets just send the mail, then everyone who are right now online will get 500 of spams now. All they do is sending e-mails, and they will earn money by phishing. The people are on complete control on the messages, and all of the e-mails could be specified. And either it is able to generate spams, which means that every single spams will have different names.

The video also mentioned about direct malicious attack, which takes down the entire website. If there are many people are concentrating on only one site, and there will be DISTRIBUTED DENIAL OF SERVICE (DD0S). But because people also need to earn money, they make people to pay. Moreover, when people are offline, then the money is taken. All of the gambling websites and other websites that generates many people are included.

Surprisingly, there are only 60 machines to overload and which makes the site shows as “the page cannot be displayed.”

To defend against these spams and attacks, people should know that the computer is originally damaged by just visiting the sites. To protect, then you should update your computer, and sometimes firewall, either anti-virus programs. There is another choice, which Bot Nets to go to self-destruct.

After I watched this video, it made me to feel how dangerous that online could be dangerous, and the owners have all the responsibility on the computer. Still, I’m happy about many anti-virus programs that will detect all of the viruses like worms and Trojan horses. Now I know what should I do when the site is slow or not working. This video gives many information about how to detect. May be everybody should see this video, so they will detect their own computer by their own self.

Reflection and solution on debate

     In the geography class, our class had silent debate and real live debate for half-half times. Both gave very different feeling and reflections to me. This was the first time that I actually had silent debate. It was just literally typing on the computer, and give some evidences and rebuttals  just like live debate. But it felt very different than live debate. I thought it would be actually easier to debate than debate in live, because if you have a good note that you prepared, then you could just copy and paste. (This was my first thought toward silent debate). And unfortunately, this thought changed after 10 minutes. When we started to reply on other’s opinion, we needed to read all of the pre-written replies to reply back. And it looked messy to read all of the replies, because it was all RE, RE, and RE’s. However, I thought this debate was more effective way to debate, because the debate didn’t went out of the topic easily. People tried to move on to the next critical ideas without going out of the topic. It was pretty accurate debate and of course, silent. I liked it. However, I think there could be better way to show all of the replies that was written, not like showing all the replies in different column. May be showing all of the replies in MSN chat style would be better to read. Then it won’t be messy as it did today.

     The original debate, live debate was happened in different ways too. There was observer who observes one person, and records all of the behaviors, eye contacts, number of talking, emotions that the person shows. I think that was very good way to know self’s behavior during the debate. Either debating with more emotions into it made the debate more fun. The silent debate didn’t have emotions in it. But there were problems, too. Because there was no chair, who selects the person who will talk, the debate was almost out of topic most of the time. And there was some awkward situation like nobody talks, or one person talks too much so that other people couldn’t talk. It was a bit unfair debate, because if you lose your chance to talk, then there is high possibility that you won’t talk for long time, from starting to end. It would be better if there was chair, so the debate won’t mess up all the time. However, I think both of the debates was very useful experiences, so that it will help me in the future.

    To give solutions of this debate, I think in present, we all should agree with using oil. Because there is no other sources that people are actually able to use it quickly and cheaply. The solar power and wind power energy is still very broad to people in the world, so that would be not enough to use it yet. And right now, it is very expensive to use; moreover, the people are not really used to the solar power cars so people might not convinced to use the cars like that. And it still has a fault that if there is no sun, then the car won’t be able to use it. But like after the oil is gone, I think we should use some other sources, because there will be no oil, and I believe that there will be some different inventions that will allow us to use some different kinds of energy than only oil. Either if there is more effective way to drill the oil out from the ground, without any harming environment, I agree with drilling oil. But everybody should know that drilling oil is harming environment, and you don’t just agree with drilling oil because you just basically need to use the oil. I think drilling oil have advantages and disadvantages. So we just need to use oil carefully now.

Xtranormal

Xtranormal is great tool to use to make short videos. It allows you to do some small actions, even change the motions, and camera angles. I think may people should be able to use this tool, so that you would make the video easier. You just need to write the script on the left part, and select some motions. It is really easy to make. I guess you would like this tool, because it feels fun and exciting. Use it!

• How?: gather all the  materials in houses that is not used anymore (clothes, toys, home supplies, …etc.) and sell to each other to earn money for donating. After the bazaar, we can donate the leftover materials with the money and food that is bought by the money that we earned.

• Who?: all the school members (teacher, students, staffs, and parents)
• When?: After Winter Break
• Why?: To reduce the hunger and poverty

They buy tickets at the entrance and do the activities that they want. The activities can be set up in each classroom. After the festival, we can have dance party or show. The money that earned by selling tickets can go to charity.

Millennium Development Goals

First of all, the Millennium Development Goals are the 8 goals that will be achieved in 2015. These goals help targeted people to have better living condition. These are all related to unequal world, and those 8 goals are:

• End Poverty and Hunger
• Universal Education
• Gender Equality
• Child Health
• Maternal Health
• Combat HIV/AIDS
• Environmental Sustainability
• Global Partnership

I want to talk about the environmental sustainability in all different kinds of millennium goals. Environmental sustainability can be happen by only protecting the environment. Most of poor people are affected by environment or natural resources for their livelihood. But they still have more possibility to live poorer if the environment is not protected.

This goal could be divide in two different section, which is water and sanitation and carbon dioxide (carbon emission). The country need clean water to live in better condition, and be healthy. If the country can’t access to the clean water enough, then the country cannot achieve this goal. Either carbon emission could be a big problem, because people could get affected by the carbon emission in many different ways, such as decreasing life expectancy. Anything related to environment could be decrease. If the country have enough condition to have clean water and less carbon emission, then the environment will last for a longer time than now.

What we can do in community to get reduce the problem about clean water is that we should not use many chemical supplies when we live. Somthing like shampoo, or any other supplies could harm the environment so badly, that the environment won’t have any time or chance to be clean. Not only this, but may be you could gather some people who have interest in water and sanitation problem. So they will tell us to do something to protect our environment, and make it more clean so the targets could have better life condition. If this is solution of clean water and sanitation, then we should do something about carbon emission, too. Because people are cutting down the trees only for their profit and not considering the environment that the next generation will have, the carbon emission rate is keep increasing. But to solve this problem, it is quite easy. Just try to not to use lots of carbon. To do this, we could ride a bike or walk when we go short distance, or use fewer amounts of powers that harm the environment. If we do this and get used to it, then the world will have better environmental condition.

But not only in community, there are many other things that yourself could do to help the targets. To solve the water and sanitation problem, you could do the samething what all of us need to do. However, you may think it won’t give any affect to the world if you use a little more amount of chemical supplies. But if every thinks like that, then we will be never able to recover our environment. To solve the carbon emission, same as water and sanitation problem, you need to do things that we can do. If could be hard to follow those things in the real life, because everybody is used to driving car, not walking. However, we need to change our world, so the targets won’t have more harmful and worse environment.

Many kinds of pollution can decrease the quality of our lives. Being aware with all of the trials that we can make and giving small helps will start the change, so the next generation would have better condition to live.

Essential Questions

How can we convince rich people to help poverty?

In reality, you could hear that the most of rich people don’t help people who are in poverty right now. The rich people do have an enough condition to help the people who are in poverty, but they are not convinced yet. May be they are not convinced because they had never been into poverty like them, so they don’t have fell anything about the poverty. But still, I think the rich people need to be in the center of helping poverty, and make less poverty so it won’t affect the rich people and the people who are in poverty anymore.

As you know, people who are rich are rich because they have more money than other. This relates that they should use that money to help poverty as donating the money to the countries. To make them do this, they need some motives to be involved. Listening to experiences that people who went into poverty could be a motive, so the rich people could be convinced. Or trying to eat the food which the poorer people eat in the poverty, showing the pictures of the countries in bad condition will be motives, so it will convince people to be involved in it.

It is very unfortunate that people just pass this problem, because it is not near to them yet. But we all should care about this problem and give ideas to help this problem. If you don’t, then this poverty will be bigger and bigger, so it will make you to live in the poverty, too.
