UNLUCKY Raul Bustos escaped the devastation of a massive earthquake only to end up trapped with 32 fellow miners half a mile underground.

Mine worker Raul had just recently changed jobs after the devastation of one of South America’s biggest natural disasters.

Six months ago, former shipworker Raul, 40, his wife Carola Narvaez and their children were living in the port city of Talcahuano, which was destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami.

Their house survived the destruction but the family moved hundreds of miles and Raul found work earning £700 a month as a heavy machinery mechanic at the gold and copper mine near Copiapo.

Then, three weeks ago his luck ran out. A tunnel collapse brought down 700,000 tons of rock, trapping Raul and his fellow workers deep in the bowels of a mountain.

Footage of the men, bearded, haggard but still smiling, has reached the surface to spur rescuers to increase their efforts to free them before isolation and illness begin to claim lives.

Meagre rations are getting through to the men who, in turn, are sending back letters to their loved ones.

For Carola Narvaez, 36 and their children Maria Paz, five and three-year-old Vicente, the notes that reach the surface bring hope that they will be reunited.

Experts predict it will be three months before an escape tunnel breaks through to the men. Carola Narvaez has left the children with her parents and is staying in the makeshift camp which has sprung up around the entrance shaft.

Last night she said: “In the earthquake we just had to keep on living, we had our lives.

“This is the same. It is producing much anguish, isolation and fear but we’re alive. My husband is alive down in that mine and we will have another happy ending.”

Summary

-This article is about man named Raul Bustos, who has undergone lots of natural disasters and survived. When he was living in port city of Talcahuano, their house was completely destroyed by earthquake and tsunami. They then moved hundreds of miles and found a job of handling heavy machinery mechanic at the gold and copper mine near Copiapo. However the earthquake occurred at the tunnel, which caused collapse of 700,000 tons of rock. It trapped 32 of Rau Bustos crews, and they could communicate each other by sending messages. It would take 3 months to make an escape tunnel to reach the men. His wife is being positive and said they’ll be alright.

Reflection

-This article affects my country, because Korea also mines coals, so they should be cautious of accidents like this. Recently, flood rose in Korea, and lots of people lost their homes and occupations. My community should realize that working in mine is always a dangerous job, so they should avoid job as mining. I feel sad for Raul Bustos, but especially of his wife, because they can’t see their husband for three months, without knowing if her husband would survive. Also, one of the Chile’s gold mines is gone, so I wonder how they would get compensated for that loss. Not only that, sub-area of the tunnel would have been harmed, so it would cost lots of money to repair those areas. The solution of this problem would be to primarily make the escape tunnel as soon as possible, and identify regions that have the priority percent of occasion of earthquakes. In my opinion, this article is available. The author was not biased of one side, the author stated only facts. Also, the date and the story of this article are valid for me to use.

This picture is a picture of collapsed tunnel in Chile, and it looks very awful to be trapped inside that tunnel.

Figure1. Picture of collapsed tunnel

(I can’t post the picture of the map because it does not have enough memory, and I deleted other things too, but it says it needs extra 26kb)

Figure 2. Location taken place

Two questions

-Will Raul Bustos and his crew be safe?

-Will Raul Bustos still going to have a job that involves lots of risk after the rescue?

-Will other countries help them to make an escape tunnel to rescue Raul Bustos?

-How much gold and jewels would the tunnel contain?

-Did the earthquake give damages to other places?

Unfamiliar vocabulary

-Bowels: deep part of earth

-Footage: payment by the running foot of work done.

-haggard: tired expression

-spur: encourages to do it

-Meagre rations: amount that you want to have

-makeshift: things are temporary and usually of poor quality, but they are used because there is nothing better available.

Two Essential Questions (Kyung Seok Oh)

August 29th, 2010

1. Why should we stay informed of what is happening in the world?

-There are three reasons why we should stay informed of what is happening around the world. First of all, we can prevent our life by knowing the circumstances of the country. For example, if we are traveling to other countries, the country that we are going might be undergoing the issue of serious epidemics or natural disasters. If we weren’t informed by this fact, we would die by going to that country. Second, we can prepare our self by observing what is happening to other countries. Other countries might have collapse or success by doing certain activities. By observing this information, we can do the same to our country to prepare from not letting it happen to our country. For example, Japan has been damaged by serious cause of tsunami. If we are informed how and why the tsunami is caused, our country can prepare our self from these serious damages. Third, we can help the country that is undergoing serious problems. For example, the country, Haiti has undergone serious earthquake. If we weren’t informed that earth quake had caused in Haiti, Haiti would have got any supplies and eventually will end up as collapsed country. If the same thing was happened to our country, our country wouldn’t get needed supplies when the country faces crisis.

2. Why should we be critical of the information given to us by the media?

-There are two reasons why we should be critical of the information given us by the media. The first reason is that there is millions of information that is posted on the media. We can’t exactly judge whether every information is true or false, and by perceiving information that are not true will cause disputes. For example, if our geography class had a debate, each team will have supporting information gathered from the media upon their topic. By perceiving biased ideas from these information is what is causing the debate. Let’s say John’s team has won the debate. However, regarding the true fact, Kyung Seok’s team was supposed to win. The person that has followed a decision of John’s idea will have tremendous deficit. Second, we can’t say if the information is valid or not. The information might be true, but it might be what we do not want to find. For example, the article that we are searching for this project might be outdated and off-topic. In other words, if we are not critical of the information, the information will be useless.

Time limit on computer (SSIS vs HRHS) (Similarity)

December 9th, 2009

time-limit-on-computer-graph

Our class has created a survey about similarity of internet shopping. In this data, total of 133 students from HRHS and SSIS surveyed the question. In SSIS, 72 students have been surveyed, and 60 students from HRHS surveyed the question

Hypothesis: Our group hypothesized that students in both HRHS and SSIS use have a time limit in their computers, because most parents wants their child to use computer in certain time, for their health also for them to study.

Result: The 19percent in SSIS has time limits on their computer, and 81% of students in SSIS have no time limits on their computer. For students in HRHS, 20 percent of students have time limits on their computer, and 80 percent of students have no time limit on their computer.

Conclusion: Our hypothesis was wrong, and it was surprising how students in both schools don’t have time limits on computers. Assumption our group made was both parents in SSIS and HRHS isn’t really strict about length of time students’ use in computer.

Scratch emoticon (Erasing & Drawing Function)

December 9th, 2009

Our ict class has created a scratch project of using drawing function and drawing function. There are 4 sprites in total, scratch man (drawing function), scratch woman (drawing function), eraser (erasing function) and a pencil (drawing function).

1

First, the Scratch man will draw the grid with x axis and y axis with the back ground. The hardest part of this project was drawing a grid, because the command and the number should be exactly the same, or else grid will add extra lines, or the sprite will run around madly. Also we should minimize the number of the commands by using ‘repeat’ command to receive more points. The importance of a graph is to utilized coordinate specific point which is key point of this project.

Then, the eraser will chase him and erase him then it erases all the back ground too. By that, eraser will not actually erase the grid and background, but will overlap the back ground with white paint.

3

The sprite will redraw the grid and when the pencil sprite is clicked, it will draw an emoticon with circle eyes. It took me about 20 minutes to figure out how to draw a circle, by using commands, and a number 360.

4 5

Afterward, Scratch man will erase the grid and an emoticon, and redraw the grid for another emoticon. If the Sprite woman is clicked, it will draw an emoticon with square eyes and mouth (Also teeth!).

6

This scratch project was really fun, and I was desire to work more after school or class. But the only thing I don’t like about this project is it gets frustrating when the commands doesn’t work the way it should be. But this project was really fun and I enjoyed it.

Xtranormal Science project

November 27th, 2009

Our class have made the xtranormal video on our science project. Enjoy~ It’s about changes of 3 principals of matter.

Taking a better photo

November 26th, 2009

Avoiding mergers

You can be sure the camera always sees mergers, so look for plain backgrounds before you pose your subject. In this case the correction was simple because the two settings were only a few feet apart.

 picture-004     picture-005

In this picture, two metal sticks are sticking up from the head. It looks awful, like if you have big horns in the head.

But the picture at right doesn’t have metal stick sticking up from the head, and using metal stick as a prop gave more unique style. (?)

Lines

Lines also play an important role in composition. This sculpture has some beautiful lines, but they’re obscured by the busy background. Let’s simplify this picture by moving our camera viewpoint in close to the base of the sculpture.

picture-007

The line to the ladder creates curiosity to the top ceiling. The line of the ladder made the eye simple and easy path to follow to the main subject.

Rule of the Third

Before you snap the picture, imagine your picture area divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically. The intersections of these imaginary lines suggest four options for placing the center of interest for good composition. The option you select depends upon the subject and how you would like that subject to be presented.

picture-006

The foot is placed in one of the 4 position. The object in the center of the picture gives very dull and simple styles. But placing object in either 4 places gives unique style of the object.

Rule of the Third

The picture above looks like the person is trying to run out of the picture. But the nextpicture looks like the person is walking to the picture.

Reflection on making grid and erasing fuction (Scratch)

November 11th, 2009

So far, our class learned how to make grid on the scratch, with using unique sprite and unique background. Our class goal was also to reduce the command short as it can, by using “repeat” or “forever”. After we’re done with making graph, our class also made a sprite which will erase the graph. First it was kind of complicated, but after I figured out the tips, it was easy. Then afterwards, in the blank screen, we should put back our original graph, with our sprite drawing happy face. This Scratch project was really cool, and fun. I had better understanding to how to use numbers to make grids.

Xtranormal reflection

November 5th, 2009

Our class used the application named extra normal. It is a application to set up the script and settings to make simple movies. We can choose animation and we can set up camera view. The maximum actors in the script can be up to 1 ~xtranormal-1024x6512 people, and the settings were given. We can add sounds and musics to the movie, and the cool part was characters pronounce the words like we wrote in the script. Because I had problems with my log in ID, I couldn’t save the work I have done. After our class is done with introduction, we’re suppose to make movie using our science project script. It was lots of fun.

Animoto Reflection

October 13th, 2009

In this project, our classed used a tool named Animoto which redesign our pictures into very cool design of the video. The video is about our selves, which can be about our hobby, favorite food, sports and stars! It would be so cool if we have used Animoto in our science project. It is very cool!!
