Lines are very important in photography. If a picture has a too busy background. One ways to simplify it is by zooming in and capturing the viewer’s attention with strong lines. In addition, one can also use diagonal and/or repetitive lines to draw interest to the picture.img_0107

As you can see, I chose this picture for the lines because the pipes are going in a (sort of) linear direction. The picture is zoomed in to only focus on the pipes and there are many repetitive lines.

When taking photos, it’s important to make sure that the picture balances out. For example there are light and dark areas, making sure one side isn’t too ‘heavy’, etc… To do that, you can by using geometric figures, and lines.

The reason I used this as a picture of balance is because since you can see all for legs of the bench it seems more balanced. If i had taken the photo showing only showing three legs, then the photo would look unbalanced.

img_0124Simplicity is giving the center of your interest the most visual attention. To do so you can leave out all unnecessary objects and zoom in on the subject. You can also choose a plain background and change your viewpoint so that there aren’t any objects distracting the viewer from the subject.

This is a picture of simplicity because there is only one subject that is focused on and the background is plain. In addition, it’s zoomed in to show the texture of the pipe and to show how old it is. There isn’t any other objects around the pipe so nothing distracts the viewer from the pipe.

Rules of thirds is when you divide the camera screen into a 3×3 grid. Instead of putting the subject right in the middle, put the subject into one of the corners of the thirds. By simply changing the viewpoint, it makes a more effective picture. In addition to that, the photo should also give the subject a definite path to follow and plenty of space to which they can move into so it doesn’t look like they’re walking/running off the photograph.

The reason that I took this as my picture for Rules of Thirds is because I had put the main focus of the photo, which is the sprinkler and cone hat, onto the upper right hand corner instead  of the middle.

Mergers are objects that are in the background that seems to ‘grow’ out of the subject’s head/arms/other body parts. When taking photos, it’s best to avoid them, and you can do that by putting the subject on a plain background or keeping objects from getting too close to the subject. In addition, you should also only use one prop.

I think that this is two picture of how to avoid mergers because as you can see with the smaller picture, there is a post growing out of the trash can’s top. On the other hand, in the bigger picture, the camera is focused only on the trash can and the background is pretty plain. Simply by moving the angle of the camera, I avoided the post ‘growing’ out of the trash can.
