Chemistry Language

Grade 5 students are studying ‘Mixtures and Solutions’ this month.

by Brian Hathcok

They are learning many difficult concepts and tons of new vocabulary. One of the ideas that they will be exposed to is the Periodic Table. Take a look at this website to see a great interactive periodic table!

Even though the experiments students are doing seem simple, they are introducing them to abstract concepts. Asking 5th graders to explain these ideas in sentence form is quite challenging for them. Now, if your first language is not English, that doubles the difficulty level.

For example, try to give a definition for the word ‘liquid’. Everyone knows what a liquid is, but how do you explain it? Not so easy is it.
