Validity of Websites for Dummies – May 26th /09

Websites online are one of many sources that you can find needed information from. Nowadays, you can practically find information about everything in the internet and websites. Hundreds and thousands of websites appear to give information that are very useful for people but other hundreds and thousands appear to not help at all or even advertise or have information about inappropriate things that you do not expect to find. Or in other case, the information that you thought was just the right information for you and that you used might only be a person’s opinion rather than a real fact that was proven to be right. So, for those people who don’t know much about the validity of websites and how to find accurate information, they should look up for following things that should be able to be found in websites.

Proper grammar

-          The grammar might be a source that can tell you the “level” of the author’s article or even his/her knowledge. If the grammar is not good, the article might be considered not a good article for you to get the information you need or the author isn’t a professional writer or any professional person that can give you reliable information.

URLs

-          URLs are very important in the article that you find the needed information. URLs are the sources that show where the author got the information written in his article. It shows that the author was not writing of what he thinks or his opinion but facts that were proved to be right.

Links ending with org, gov, etc.

-          Links that end with org, gov, etc. contribute to the websites that are created by professional workers. But links that end with com, net, etc. are mostly contributed to the websites that are created by anyone, because those websites are the ones that people can easily create and put up their personal things or opinions. Since the links ending with org, gov, etc. are created by professional workers, the information you receive from the site would be more accurate than the information from the site where people put up their opinions or personal ideas.

Author’s name

-          The author’s name is also very important to be included in the web page for the article. If the author’s name wasn’t noted, how are you to use the information the author provided when you do not know that the author is dependable for his/her  information?

Author should be a professional person

-          When the author’s name is noted in the web page or the article, it is important that the author is a professor, professional writer or worker, etc, who is dependable for his/her information. The author could be a random person or a young kid, who has high probabilities of writing about their opinions rather than facts, which doesn’t give you good information. But if a professional person was the author, the information in his/her article would mostly be facts and reliable to use.

Appropriate pictures

-          The pictures that are included in the article that you are trying to find information from should be appropriate; the image should contribute to the information that you are trying to find. If the picture is totally different and does not have any connection with what you are trying to find about, the article might not be giving any good needed information for you and might just be talking about different topic.

Host

-          The host site of the blog/web page should be a dependable site that a professional person/group manages.  If the host site is not a professional site and it is close to a personal site, then the information that you get from the blog which is from the host site would not be as dependable as the information from professional, well-known host sites.
