The CNN has reported that China have confirmed the North Korean President, Kim Jung Il’s visit to China for the recent few days. Besides Chinese government, many other countries have reported the visit but this was the first time when the Chinese confirmed it. Kim Jung Il have met with Chinese president Hu Jintao in Chang Chun, and discussed about the early resumption of the six-party talk (figure 1). Six-party talk normally includes North and South Korea, China, Japan, United States, and Russia discussing about the disarm of nuclear weapon in North Korea, which the North Koreans have stopped since last year. However, have announced that Kim Jung Il would want to resume quickly to communicate and keep the relationship close with China. Other than discussing about the six-party talk, according to South Korean news, another reason for the trip was to decent his power to his son, Kim Jong Un. However, overall coincidence was Kim Jung Il’s visit to China even though formal president of United States, Jimmy Carter was visiting North Korea to release captured US citizen.

There is much political significance to this article. First of all, after North Korea has stopped the six-party talk, the relationship between North Korean and other countries have been weakened, therefore supplies given to North Korea have been paused, and furthermore recently there was a big flood causing serious problems. In few Korean articles, they have asserted that the visit was to receive an aid. Anyway, this visit represents the North Korean government’s reliance on the Chinese government, as the same communist system government. Second, as a South Korean, I hear dozens of news article about Kim Jung Il and his successor. Few years ago, this wasn’t a great deal however as Kim Jung Il’s health has been weakened, these articles flew all over the news site and channel because of the possible reoccurrence of the war as the ruler changes. Therefore the changes in the ruling system might affect the relationship with the South Korean government. Lastly, it was very ironic because the period that Kim Jung Il set to China was nearly the same date as Jimmy Carter visited North Korea. Out of the politics, it isn’t a good manner to leave home when a visitor visits. Therefore I think this represents the Kim Jung Il’s small symbol representing him disliking United States.

The two questions related to the article are, although Russia is the country which started the communist idea, why would North Korea more relying on Chinese government? And is Chinese government willing to maintain the good relationship with North Korean even though they have been weakened their relationship with other countries recent months? Because it could work as adverse effect on their diplomacy.

The CNN has reported that the case like Avatar, one of the Hollywood movies, has happened in Niyamgiri Hills, which is located in the eastern India, Orissa. The environmental authorities have rejected the proposal of British mining corporation, Vedanta Resources to mine the region (figure 1). The reason for this decision was that not only it is illegal, but also it will destroy one of the primitive tribes, the Dongria Kondh tribe’s livelihood. For years, over 8,000 people have been fighting against for the Vedanta, who wanted the buried bauxite, for aluminum. Also prior to the Vedanta incident, the Indian government has rejected the South-Korean Corporation, POSCO’s steel plant proposal. By these incidents, the experts are expecting the Indian government to be able to cope better between the development and the tribal rights.

This article is politically significant because according to the prior news article published by the CNN this year; this issue has been going on since last year. For over a year, the authorities and the campaigners have fought back the company by exampling them with the environments the tribes bond together. Even though the company has said they will follow the international best and the law since India is considered as the biggest democrat country, where law follows the majority, a netizen have posted a video contain asking the company “If Vedanta mines the mountain, the water will dry up. In the Niyamgiri forests, there are tigers, bears, monkeys and wild boar. All kinds of other animals. We all live together. Where will the animals go to drink? Where will we go to drink?”

Even though the company has declared that they will follow by the democrat, I think the majority wanted to save their primitive tribes and so do the authorities. Another reason why this article is politically important is that as mentioned, experts are more looking forward to see the Indian government to protect more environment than the economics. By this, unlike other countries, for example South- Korea, since they started digging rivers for Grand Canal which most of the citizens think it’s useless because it harms the most of the environments beside; it shows how the Indian government’s mind is different from them. One putting more weight on the environment and vice versa,

However two ironic questions that I have in my mind with this article are that though the company has said they will follow the law on February, why and exactly how did it become an illegal act on August? And, how big were the undermined resources that motivated the company to go against the authorities and the citizens of India?

This article summarizes the 5 key points that many people fail to acknowledge about the Pakistan floods. The most shocking bit that most people fail to realize the grandeur of is that more people are affected in this flood than the number of victims of the 2004 Tsunami, and the earth quakes in Haiti and in Kasmir, combined. Almost 20 million have been negatively affected by the floods, either after ending up homeless, dead, injured, or at risk for disease – of which 50% are children! – and the help that they are receiving are much less than intended, and media coverage isn’t helping advance the help that they need and deserve very much. There is also speculation that the flood is of the same origin (air circulation) as the fires in Russia… or it may even by linked to climate change, as some people are suspecting that global warming is the cause for the disasters, as it may have been for most of the recent natural disasters within the last few decades.

I chose this article because I thought it was a decent summary of what most of us need to be aware of in the (very) recent Pakistan flood. I want to show that natural disasters like these aren’t just a thing of the past or something out of this earth, but it is happening right now in the middle east, people are suffering, and help is needed.

—
Devastating floods have been ravaging Pakistan for over a month, but despite widespread suffering, the media coverage of this disaster has been casual at best.

Nearly 20 million Pakistanis have been displaced from their homes and put at risk for water born disease, yet the American media seems to have marginalized the issue, impeding the flow of supplies and donations needed to provide aid.

Some believe that “the West and Europe have adopted Islamaphobia, which obviously has clouded humanitarian concerns” (Huffington Post).

You don’t have to be a political analyst to see that more social and political unrest isn’t what this region needs. People are suffering, and as fellow humans and activists, it is our duty to do what we can.

Here are 5 things you may not have known about the Pakistan floods.Become informed, and then take action!

1. The United Nations has rated the floods in Pakistan as the greatest humanitarian crisis in recent history. Already, more people have been affected in Pakistan than the 2004 South-East Asian tsunami and the recent earthquakes in Kasmir and Haiti combined.

2. The Pakistan flood may be linked to the fires in Russia. Although the unfolding disasters seem far apart, they are actually being driven by the same meta weather system, according to a report from National Geographic. Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the Boulder, Colorado-based National Center for Atmospheric Research, told the organization, “That’s because the monsoon – a seasonal wind system that brings rain and floods to Pakistan and much of the rest of Asia in summer – also drives the circulation of air as far away as Europe.”

3. Only a fraction of the people needing aid have been contacted by emergency crews. In the 10 days following the initial flood waves, the government managed to distribute only 10,000 food packs, which contained a box of dried milk, and a few bottles of water and Pepsi. These packages were meant to “feed” 80,000 people, leaving 1,720,000 without any type of aid.

4. The Pakistan flood may be linked to global warming. In an unprecedented move, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has come forward to formally blamed the flooding in Pakistan on “global warming,” angering some denialists (CNSNews.com). “Indeed, the Islamic world is paying a heavy price resulting from the negative repercussions of climate change,” said OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu at an emergency meeting in Saudi Arabia.

5. The destruction is enormous, and preys on the weak. Reports indicate 62,000 square miles of land have been affected — about one-fifth of the entire country. Of the 15 million people seriously affected, about 50 percent are children.

5. What do you believe will happen to our world? What are the solutions? Using arguments and evidence presented in these graphs and articles and your homework readings, come to your own conclusion.

Personally, I don’t have a very firm stance when it comes to predicting world population growths; I am neither a pessimist nor an optimist. As Hans Rosling put it – I am a “very serious possibilist”. This is because population growth rates will, most likely, never truly stabilize – they can either go up, down, or fluctuate. As is with so many other global issues we face today as a species, the power to change the future is within our grasp; yet too often are our people too consumed with greed and lethargy to lift a bone. I do not wish to make an unyielding projection of what we could face in 50 years’ time, unless I was told to while taking into account the possibility that growth rates will be changing at a constant rate, or stabilize for all these years. But evidently it is not so, and never will be. We as humans still, after so many years, have yet to learn to expect the unexpected; we continue to make projections about the future, which are indeed helpful – but if we do not stand up and be the change, nothing can and will go in our favor. It is not about watching growth and recording observations so much as it is about considering all the possible changes population numbers can face, owe up to it ourselves, and change. Change the pattern; change the trends; do whatever it takes. And it is if – and only if – we do the right thing, that world overpopulation issues will settle. The future can only depend on what we are doing right this moment.

Current projections we have today are still very vague, given that nothing can really truly be expected out of such a diverse world, where just about anything can happen. However, using such data is one of the first steps in tackling the problem: by studying how to avoid pessimistic projections and how to achieve the opposite. World populations, especially by country, need to take into account various factors, including birth rates, death rates, growth rates (natural or overall), and emigration/immigration statistics. It is then that we can even identify what the problem is!

In essence, it is not about what we are doing internally. The world out there is growing at incredible rates – we need to go to where the problem is… and dig deeper. Overpopulation is starting to become a bigger and bigger problem worldwide, especially in the developing world; resources are starting to become scarce in comparison with the growing populations, and because resources are finite, soon the world will no longer be able to sustain all the billions of humans that it will continue to accommodate. What is the core, the stem of the issue at hand? And how do we fix this? Why is it that population growth rates are so high in developing countries? Traditional values, religious beliefs, ignorance, lack of education, lack of birth control… What is, then, the source of all of these influences?

Poverty.

I believe that, in the developing world, poorer families are those that truly lack the knowledge, education and means to properly control their growth rates to a sustainable level. Heck, they may not even be truly aware that we, as one world, are facing any problems with population at all. This is why I believe that education is one of the first steps to tackle ignorance. But how do we get there? By improving quality of life – of which we can achieve through greater wealth. By moving those in poverty to the middle class, they would then be able to have a much wider range of understanding of not just what is happening in their countries, but around the world. Of the many reasons why so many children are born into families in these countries, a very crucial one to consider is that many tend to believe that, the more children you have, the more hands will be working on the fields, and the richer you will become; however, this tends to be root of the problems that they are running away from. This lack of awareness, in turn, acts as the root of many of our population growth problems today. This is why I believe formal education is so important – it is able to make people think twice about their conservative and traditional practices and beliefs, moving on from an illiterate mindset to that of someone who is aware and desires change for the better. And from then on, things can only improve. Because, in the bigger picture, as developing countries are skyrocketing in population numbers and the more developed ones are not (with some even decreasing in growth rates!), we have to accept and tackle the biggest and most obvious issue at hand: the large gap between rich and poor. And with populations of the poor growing at such an incredible speed, this gap is only getting later, and larger, everyday. Birth rates are increasing in the developing world, children are dying sooner (with high infant mortality rates due to low qualities of life), and then even more babies are being born. This is why I believe that the first step to take toward tackling the global overpopulation problem is to take steps towards eliminating poverty. You must dig even deeper, and ask yourself – how do we help those who live on under a dollar a day? How do we, as a person, as a group, as a community – help move those in poverty to the middle class?

This is where it starts with you.

Figure 1: United Nations World Population Projections

You – your hands, your thoughts, your innovative ideas, and most importantly, your actions. I believe that, if no action is taken, then the world will go down those that pessimistic minds have set for it. Populations will continue to grow and may even reach the higher projections that have been made (figure 1).

However, if we face the problem and take action – change will be made, and you will be free to predict for the future what you have done to change current projections.

What role will YOU and your children have in contribution to world population?

The last few months have been a painful battle for Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook (oh, yeah, the largest social networking site, like, ever), against the hundreds of millions of Facebook users trying to aim for justice once and for all: fair privacy. Mark doesn’t like that idea. In his defense, he has continued to argue that users shouldn’t be so descrete of their online data – after all, “the age of privacy is over” anyway. And, seemingly, he’s been trying too hard to prove his point.

Facebook has undergone several major changes during the past half-a-year, starting this battle just last December 2009, when Zuckerberg thought it funny to expose a huge portion of your private information – name, city, photos, friends list, networks, and pages – to the entire internet to enjoy. This, of course, drove its users nuts.

Of course.

Zuckerberg explains:

“And then in the last 5 or 6 years, blogging has taken off in a huge way and all these different services that have people sharing all this information. People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people. That social norm is just something that has evolved over time.

But Zuckerberg, whose information are you really claiming all control over? I mean, isn’t this a social networking site, where its users should have their right to , well, not be instantaneously exposed to the entire world overnight? Riiight?

Right.

So just recently this week, Zuckerberg has finally backed down from his multi-millionaire idea of making privacy settings as confusing and misleading as possible, along with making his words play with your mind as much as possible (“Allowing everybody to see your information will extend your network and allow you to connect with all your friends easily!” Not.), to switching it to a much simpler and user-friendly control panel.

New privacy settings: Has Facebook really shaped up?

Does this mean that Zuckerberg’s really changing things around? I mean, facebook has been messing with our privacy since forever, so that doesn’t mean that he can’t just change it up again… right?

For the time being, I’ll just stay on the down low and, well, play it safe. Just like you should. Not just on facebook, but everywhere on the internet – who knows, it might just be one giant conspiracy.

The Playstation by Sony is widely known by everyone. The console began as a simple arcade console build to entertain the minds of the young. The first game console from Sony became a hit in the markets. Through graphical improvements by the years Sony developed and upgraded all the systems in the Playstation and there was the Playstation 2. This new and totally “in town” gaming console sprung the markets to a new level, its golden age lasted for around 6 years supplying sufficient entertainment to all age groups. This console now had motion detector cameras, sensor pads, tone catchers and DVD player making it a “karaoke, DDR, Cinema and Life.” At the time the Playstation was amazing, its graphics seemed amazing even better than Computer games however, what was the issues was a TV was always required so the PSP was created. This new developed gamer-tech was on par with the playstation and eventually even surpassed it. With 2010 being the day Sony decided to surprise the markets the PS3 was created! This new mega-tech hardcore gaming console was built with high processors, quick graphic runners and blue-ray readers making this the ultimate creation of 2010. But this new creation didn’t impress its players, it was all too common and then the fault was realized, the perfect gaming console had all the traits of a computer. As soon as Sony realized this pattern they decided on the PS4, changing a gaming console into a whole computer. This upgrade was said to become a part of daily life, a component in families life-styles making it a homey-tech instead of a loner-tech.

Mr. White
April 9, 2010

 My trip to Singapore
My family often takes family trips during TET vacations. My unforgettable trip to Singapore also happened during TET vacation. I was 11 years old when I visited Singapore; it was not the time where I listened to what my parents say. I was rebellious. I did not know that not listening to my parents would cause so much pain on me. I went through some hard moments, and therefore this trip helped me learn my lessons of obeying my parents,
Since it was TET, lots of shops and department stores were closed. Singapore is called the land of shopping, and the point of our trip was shopping but unfortunately, our plans of shopping failed. Instead, we decided to have a tour around Singapore and visit famous places. Singapore is a small-round-quiet country and we didn’t expect much to see, but we were wrong. There were countless places to visit, and the places we visited were: scary-dark-mysterious night safari, fun-crazy-crowded amusement park, and smelly-wild-noisy bird park. I learned my lessons in all these places; what happened was different, but I learned the same lesson.
On the first day, we visited the night safari and were lining up for the small-weak-slow bus that we are taking. While lining up, there was something that caught my attention. It was a strawberry smoothie that a kid was drinking, a red-fresh-icy one. I begged my mom for the smoothie but my mom refused because soon, it was our turn to get on the bus. I cried and cried like a baby, and at last my mom bought me the red-fresh-icy smoothie. I was happy, and I was able to finish the smoothie before getting on the small-weak-slow bus. The problem occurred after 5 minutes of the night safari tour. My bladder was full, and sent a signal to my brain that I needed to pee immediately. It was only the first 5 minutes of the tour, and it was impossible for me to get off the bus and pee outside because I didn’t know what will happen to me. A big-mean-wild tiger might come out and attack me or a poisonous-long-colorful snake might slide up to me and bite me. I called my mom for help and my mom looked at me in a satisfied face. I could read a message on her face saying “I told you not to drink before getting on the bus.” I nearly died that day, holding my bladder. I had only one thought in my head, “Why didn’t I listen to my mom?”
On the second day, we went to the fun-crazy-crowded amusement park. We enjoyed all the times there, and at lunch, we went into a German restaurant and ate sausage. The long-fat-red sausage was so delicious that I ordered my own plate after sharing the plate with my sister. Right after finishing eating, I ran out to ride the “flying elephant.” My mom blocked my way and told me not to go on a ride right after my lunch, but I ignored her and went for the ride. After riding the “flying elephant,” I had a stomachache, which gave me the feeling of wanting to throw up. The rest of the day was over for me; I lied down on the park bench and watched my sister enjoy other rides. I had only one thought in my head, “Why didn’t I listen to my mom?”
On the last day, we went to the smelly-wild-noisy bird park. This park had wild birds flying freely everywhere, and for us it was just like walking inside a rainforest. I had my favorite snack inside my bag, and while walking I felt hungry and asked my mom if I could eat my snack. My mom said “no, the birds might attack you.” As usual I ignored my mom and opened up my snack. At first nothing happened but soon one and two birds came flying up to me. In a little while, a group of birds blocked my way waiting for my snack to be given away to them. It seemed like they’ve done this a lot, hiding somewhere high, and attacking people when someone with snacks appear. I was their victim; I dropped my snack and ran away. While running away, I had only one thought in my head, “Why didn’t I listen to my mom?”
I lost numerous things because of not listening to my mom, so I learned some big lessons from the trip. I learned not to drink before getting on a bus, I learned not to ride rides right after eating, and I learned not to eat inside where wild animals are freed. The biggest phrase that my brain had for the whole trip was “Why didn’t I listen to my mom?” Singapore gave me both sweet and bitter memories.

10 1.66g 2.10g 2.18g 0.005 0.014 0.0047

4.

5. The graph shows the relationship between the quantities of lead iodide (PbI2) produced according to the mass of sodium iodide (NaI) given. By observing the graph, we can see that starting from 0.006 to 0.0011 moles of sodium iodide, the quantity of moles of lead iodide is increasing from 0.0022 to 0.0046. On the other hand, we can also see that from 0.0011 to 0.0014 moles of sodium iodide, the line that represents the quantity of moles of lead iodide is fairly flat, in comparison to the escalating, steep line from 0.006 to 0.0011 moles of sodium iodide. The last 1/3 of the graph maintains a quite flat line because when the moles of sodium is present from 0.0011 moles onwards, sodium iodide’s role changes from the limiting reactant to the reactant that is present in excess and lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) becomes the limiting reactant. As it is lead nitrate that affects the amount of lead iodide produced in the last 1/3 of the experiment, the amount of lead iodide produced does not have a huge difference because the amount of lead nitrate present remains constant throughout the whole experiment, which is having a mass of 1.66g or moles of 0.005. In conclusion, when sodium iodide is present from 0.006 to 0.011 moles, sodium iodide is the limiting reactant, thus the quantity of moles of lead iodide increases from 0.0022 to 0.0046. When sodium iodide is present from 0.0014 moles, lead nitrate becomes the limiting reactant; hence the quantity of moles of lead iodide doesn’t change much because lead nitrate is present with the amount of 0.005 moles throughout the experiment.

6. (a) Pb(NO3)2 (lead nitrate) is the reactant that is present in excess.

(b) NaI (sodium iodide) is the limiting reactant.

Predicted mass of PbI2 using Pb(NO3)2

Calculations:

1.66/331.2074 = x/1 –> x = 1.66/331.2074 = 0.005 mol Pb(NO3)2

Since ratio is 1 to 1, the mol stays the same. (0.005 mol PbI2)

0.005/1 = x/461.008 –> x = 461.008 * 0.005 = 2.305 g

Predicted mass of PbI2 using NaI

Calculations:

If NaI = 0.75g, PbI2 = 1.153 g

If NaI = 1.35 g, PbI2 = 2.074 g

For group numbers 1-5, Pb(NO3)2 always produces 2.305g of PbI2 whilst NaI produces a range of 1.153g to 2.074g of PbI2. This shows that NaI will always produce less than PbI2 than Pb(NO3) 2, thus it is the limiting reactant.

7. (a) The NaI (sodium iodide) is the reactant that is present in excess.

(b) The Pb(NO3)2 (lead nitrate) is the limiting reactant.

Predicted mass of PbI2 using Pb(NO3)2

Calculations:

1.66/331.2074 = x/1 –> x = 1.66/331.2074 = 0.005 mol Pb(NO3)2

Since ratio is 1 to 1, the mol stays the same. (0.005 mol PbI2)

0.005/1 = x/461.008 –> x = 461.008 * 0.005 = 2.305 g

Predicted mass of PbI2 using NaI

Calculations:

If NaI = 1.65g, PbI2 = 2.536g

If NaI = 2.10g, PbI2 = 3.227g

For group numbers 7-10, Pb(NO3)2 always produces 2.305g of PbI2 whilst NaI produces a range of 2.536g to 3.227g of PbI2. This shows that NaI will always produce more PbI2 than Pb(NO3)2, thus it is the reactant that is present in excess.

8. The mole ratio of Pb(NO3)2 : NaI for group number 6 is 1 : 2. Because of the ratio, there is no limiting reactant for group number six. As the mole ratio of Pb(NO3)2 : NaI : PbI2 is 1 : 2 : 1, so the moles of PbI2 predicted will always be 0.005. As a result, the shape of the graph when NaI is 0.01 moles is affected equally by number of moles of NaI and Pb(NO3)2.

A successful TV series called Digimon was created with five seasons. All were successful in fan ratings and support by the broad casters. RTL 2 and Cartoon Network all showed these seasons for about eight years and movies have been made to sequel the seasons. Season one begins with five young kids lost in a digital world. The world is run by digital monsters that are in grave danger from the dark forces known as the dark rings. Season two also start of with the same plot but new characters are introduced while the characters from season one have been represented older and more mature. The season continues and came to have the best endings of any TV series yet and ratings came over the charts. Season two was the beginning of the movies. Season three had a now twist were totally new characters were presented with no relations with season one and two at all. Instead of five kids this season began with three characters and slowly building up to six characters. Another interesting feature in season three is that this time the main characters don’t get lost in the digital world but the monster come over the human world raving havoc. Ratings were less favored in this season due to loss of freshness in ideas, so season four made a huge impact. Season four began with the originality with five kids getting lost in the world. However this time instead of monster partners they were able to transform themselves into the monsters and they were known as the knights of the digital world. Season five just sucked…

The Presence… is a novel written by Eve Bunting. I’ll be honest – I didn’t like this book. At all. I chose it by mistake, and by the time I realized how badly it was written, it was too late for me. I don’t want to be sugarcoating things, so I’ll have to be straightforward and say it was one of the worst books I have ever read. I mean – the plot’s pretty fine, considering how much unoriginality is seen now, mostly in contemporary literature (if you can call that literature at all), but that’s probably an overstatement. I could, in a sense, recommend this book to you – but only if you were asking for a horribly-written story and needed something to read to see just how bad it could be!

The Presence is supposed to be a “ghost” story, even though it didn’t seem that much of one at all – and this is explained in the beginning of the book where the narrator explained in third person that these “presences” didn’t like to be called “ghosts” (even though, ironically enough – probably to draw attention – the cover had “a ghost story” written in big letters on it). The plot isn’t too bad… but I might have to take that back as a second thought; it is full (I must stress this) of extremely over-used clichés: depressed “walking-cliché” girl meets charming, perfect boy, he likes her, while another (the “presence”, in this case) is after her as well, probably not with good intentions, girl is extremely slow, mindless and unaware of obvious danger, girl slowly falls for both boys somehow, gets in trouble, gets saved, … And that one sentence could effortlessly sum up the whole book. The first chapter very easily gave out the ending – and I could just set the book down right now before finishing the last few chapters because the whole book has been anything but unpredictable. I just had to be such a critic for this book – it was awful. (I’m in awe of its 4.5 rating on Amazon.com, which is making me almost reluctant, but I stand my ground!)

Or maybe it’s just me. Really, it probably is.

Despite all of this, it was an okay read, in some ways. What I’d enjoyed about the novel is that it had a great deal of suspense despite for its predictability. That probably sounded awkward and paradoxical, but it’s exactly what it sounds like – the plot, as a simplified whole, was only another cliché. However, as you read, events don’t just swift by easily – somehow, somewhere, there is a sense of tension. It builds you up – whether or not you’d be disappointed by it. It angers you. It saddens you. It builds emotion; it gives you something to think about it the end. Even though the plot events could be confusing and misplaced, in all I think it was decent enough to keep you thinking and interested, which is probably one of the best things the author was at in this book.

I have some mixed feelings for the book, but in the end, I wouldn’t exactly recommend it, especially to older folks – as a little kid read, it would probably be fine (probably because they wouldn’t be nearly as critical as I am?). I get extremely discouraged by clichés like these, which is probably why. I mean – you could read it, and I don’t see much of a “why not” here if you were just looking for a quick (very quick!), decent read… but if you wanted something that was a worthwhile read – that sparks, that kindles something inside you – that keeps you thinking for days and days, that awakens you, that makes you think – wow! – then this book is not for you. The first book I read, Bone By Bone By Bone by Tony Johnston, on the other hand…

As a follow-up to my recent blog-post on the novel “Bone by bone by bone” by Tony Johnston, I will be writing about the book’s literary devices, such as symbols, metaphors, characters, tone, and so on. These ‘devices’ aren’t just the icing of the cake – to me, they define a book; they add meaning, rhythm, and music; they tell the story through your imagination and through creating a world of its own – inside you. Similes alone have the ability to create striking images in your head – like a movie, only more effective. Symbolic meanings are what dig deep inside of you; they wake you up, they convey hidden messages, like bottles drifting in a sea, like carved secret messages. These are what make a book vivid, thrilling; story-telling, message conveying; rhythmic and with personal voice.

Bone by bone by bone proved almost an excellent example. What was really interesting about the book, to me, was its point of view through which the story is told, and its stupendous usage of metaphors and similes! Because it is told through an almost ‘innocent’ child’s (David’s) eyes, the novel brings you to the world of hatred and discrimination like it was never told before. I read a similar book last year, called To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM) by Harper Lee; it was told in little Scout’s point of view, which was as fascinating to me as it was to read Johnston’s rendition of this time period. Because it was not told through a victim’s voice, however, this point of view really shows us the madness that ruled the country in its true form by hearing it from an unknowing bystander’s. This way of telling the story is especially powerful, because these young white children were born oblivious to such prejudice. On the other hand, during this time period, I’d presume most grow into it as they are raised in biased families. In this novel, however, even though David grew up with his extremely racist father and great-grandmother, he’d met Malcolm, his colored blood-brother early in life; early enough that he had not grown into such hatred yet. As such, his friendship with Malcolm grew too strongly for him to be indoctrinated with racism. (In contrast, in TKAM, Scout was never raised in a racist family, and was taught by her father, Atticus, about human rights early in life.) Again, this is especially interesting because David was so young in the novel that he could not fathom why such horrible racism existed – the same attitude most of us bear for the segregation today. (Bonus points for the book for its completely exceptional similes, metaphors, usage of language, and symbolic meanings as well!)

In all, I’d say Bone By Bone By Bone by Tony Johnston was one of the best stories I’ve read. Not only because it gives such an enlightening and interesting view on the subject of segregation, but also because it was one of the most well-written novels I’d seen. The only thing that I was disappointed by, however, was the ending – the book does an excellent job of building up tension and thrill toward the ending, just for me to be let down! Don’t let this stop you, however, because maybe it’s just me being critical – see it for yourself. A good book is always a worthwhile read, and I can definitely guarantee that that is what this is.
