Recently in Social Studies we have been working on Human Rights around the world and studying what the needs of a human are. As the unit continued, we started to take action on some of the Human Rights topics. Many organizations came to SSIS to give a brief speech about what they do and how they help the world. We then got into groups and  we got in contact with some of these organizations.

My group, Annie, Sejin, and I, contacted a very well-known organization in Vietnam called Orphan Impact. Orphan Impact asked us to help the students by creating activities that will help with self-esteem for the orphans of Vietnam lacked confidence in themselves. We brainstormed lots of ideas and worked together with our counselor Mrs. Bertoia to create fun, and effective activities. We printed out a picture of a mirror and the students were to write things down that they liked about themselves and we made cupcakes so they could decorate how ever they wanted to with frosting. They had so much fun and I can say for my whole group, that we all did too.

I didn't really have any expectations for how the project would work, but it went by really easily and I'm very thankful for it. Although, I still feel that everything wen too well, and something catastrophic is going to happen. Besides the point, I think that my group and I worked very well together by organizing our time and work in a manner that got everything done productively.

I was very surprised that I enjoyed myself at the school. I didn't really know what to expect, but I'm very greatful that Orphan Impact allowed us to come because I had a really great time spending time with the students that was fun and also incorporating a bigger amount of self-esteem per student.

For the past few weeks we have been working really hard on writing in a professional tone by creating resume's and business letters. We have recently finished our resume's. The assignment was to figure out what your dream job was going to be. I have absolutely no idea what my dream job would be, so I just did my dream job for high school; being a lifeguard.

My Resume.....

When writing my resume, I really focused on what I have accomplished in my life and what the qualities I have I have as a person. As I came up with a list, responsibility came to mind. Responsibility is a really important quality because without responsibility, it's hard to accomplish much of anything. You have to be mature and have respect for any kind of situation no matter how immature or mature it comes to be. Which leads to my next point maturity. I have been told by many family and friends that I am quite mature for my age, taking professional matters in a older view rather than being childish about it. I am also very cooperative with everyone, no matter what age. I find a way to collaborate with everyone no matter what.

As I brainstormed some ideas for my resume, I realized that I have many weak qualities in a professional way. It turned out that it was easier to list things that I lack rather what I have because  I am no leader in any way, shape, or form. I am quite shy when it comes to activities and never speak my opinion unless I'm comfortable in that situation. I lack leadership in big groups in certain situations and I hope to become more comfortable in the near future. Another thing is that I lack is to use time wisely. I usually end up using my time poorly and wasting time. I do this with most assignments were I waste too much time on non-important things rather than using time productively. I also have a tendency to get into situations too deep were I'm stuck under too much work and that puts stress on me more than ever. I do this a lot with assignments where I do nearly all the work and I stress out over small things. I get stressed quite easy and I am scared to see how I turn out in the real world where a small homework assignments means nothing.

In this project on Imperialism, we focused on improving/learning about the primary driving force of imperialism in Africa.  One thing I improved while working on this project is my ability to pick out the different pieces of information in each supporting document. This blog post provides a reflection on my work, as well as a sample of what I accomplished.

I had a bit of trouble with time management because I lacked a day compared to my other classmates when writing the essay. I felt like I could have been more organized and been a little better prepared because I finished the essay later than I wanted it to be done.

A strength I showed was my ability to show voice and communicate the importance of the topic. Something I would like to work on is expanding my analysis by making more connection to the background knowledge.

For a few PE classes, we have been working on what a healthy meal is. We learned that roughly half the plate should be vegetables and fruit, a little less than a quarter should be grains, and a little more than a quarter should be protein.

So with all that knowledge so far, we made a healthy meal with a group of 4-5. My group was with Angel, Angie, Lucie, and Winnie. We all put our ideas together and divided up the work. The result was a V.E.R.Y healthy meal. We made a avocado sandwich (with whole grain bread) with a side of spinach and egg, homemade peanut-butter with freshly cut apples, and a mango yogurt popsicle.

As I said above, we all divided up the work. Angie brought the protein by making the scrambled eggs. Lucie brought the grains and a few vegetables by bringing the whole grain bread and a few avocados. I brought the utensils and made homemade peanut-butter and apples. And finally Winnie brought the mango yogurt popsicle.

The final product was a complete success!

(We made a slideshow with a video of the 'judges'. To view it click on the word video or HERE.)

In this project on 'Toy Story', we focused on improving/learning by analyzing the movie Toy Story but as philosophers in the Enlightenment ages. This is an important skill because by analyzing your work, you prove your claim and make it stronger than what it would be without one. One thing I improved while working on this project is my ability to pick information out of text and/or video, and with that information, putting it into a claim and make the overall argument a lot stronger than how it would be without one.

Time really impacted my work because the time we had to work on it was very minimal compared to other projects that we had. We had roughly two classes to finish the script, but my partner Madison and I didn't really work as hard as we should have to get it done as fast and as efficient as possible. We both worked really hard to get the script done and record as soon as possible so we had the most time to edit the video like adding videos from the movie to prove our point.

The Final Product:

So far advisory has been really fun with Mr. Swart. I really liked all the activities that we have done so far such as the paper tower competition, house league activities/meetings, and our first grade buddies. I think that having fun in Advisory really helps with stress because you can forget about all the work that you have to do just for a few minutes and just relax (goal accomplished). I know a lot more about my advisory classmates, but yet we don't do too many collaborative activities for me to make friends. I think that the whole advisory got to know a lot about Mr. Swart because of all the sharing that we do in class to get to know each other.

Overall, Advisory has been a great experience to get to know everyone and connect with our fellow advisory.

Here is my Social Studies DBQ about gender equality for the Enlightenment unit...

A Bright Spot: I think that I did pretty good on using the evidence and analyzing the information.

To Work On: I think I should work on my counterclaim and the order/ flow to the paragraph.

Goal for Science this Semester :

Studying for upcoming tests and quizzes so that I can improve on my learning skills for the unit/units.

Improving/adding more words on my writing so my work can be more descriptive and more understandable.

Asking any questions that I might have during homework or an upcoming project, test, or quiz.

The first thing I learned in chemistry is that matter is made up of atoms, molecules, and compounds. I know that a solid is a item or thing that takes up space. Such as something like counter tops. Counter tops take up space and mass. Water is the most known liquid that almost everyone knows. It can also be any drink or anything other like that.  A question that I've always wondered is how to people sort out the periodic table? Why are they in different colors and in different rows? I knew since I was in 2 or 3 grade that there was a periodic table, but I never really understood why it was sorted like that. But an element is everything on the periodic table. Like the types of metal, and other things that are on the periodic table. A lot of elements have been man-made now, and there are still working on getting more in the world. It is really amazing to know that there is science in everything. Like food, nature, writing, or anything else.

Each person didn't have the same rate, and each person didn't stay at the same temperature the whole time. None of our data stayed the same, and it didn't have much of an pattern. Everyone metal increased each trial we did it. We didn't really make any mistakes in our data, because it all looks alright, but one thing we did do was take the thermometer off the metal during the trials and it could have made an error in our data. But the weird thing about our data, is that it doesn't have an pattern. Our first trail for all of us was 30, 29, 26, 26 (as you can see in the chart above). And it kept on getting more out of question on how it worked. Hopefully we did it right, and there was no little errors. I think that the metals turn into different temperatures because of what elements makes up the different kinds of metals. Each metal could have been made up of man-made elements, but some could have been it selves. I think that it all depends on what elements are make up the type of metal.  I really enjoyed this activity. I was a lot of fun especially with my table mates because they have such a good sense of humor, and they kept me and my table mates occupied the whole time. I would really like to do this kind of activity again because it was really fun, and really interesting to know how the different types of metals reacted to the gas, lit on fire. I would do this activity again at any time in the year. I think that its more fun with your friends, than by yourself, because you can get things done faster, more fun, and get twice the more ideas.
