Olaudah Equiano: Event Story
Posted by Manh Hung in Uncategorized on January 20, 2012
Thinking that he was going to stay forever at Doran’s home, thinking that was his home sweet home. Surprisingly, Equiano was again sold. Doran had brought him to Caribbean and once again sold him to a new owner. By this time Equiano was very confused, he had learn so much from Doran, Doran had treated him so nice, and now another owner awaits him.
This new owner was called Robert King, he was from a Quaker merchant from Philadelphia. He was a captain of the ship. Equiano was sad, but in the bright side, the new owner was very nice to him, Equiano thought that he was very lucky this entire journey, had been greated with owners that are suppose to torture him to death, yet the owners had teach him a lot of things, and also gave him education. But being too free had made Equiano had the thirst of being free once. Using the opportunity of his owner being a captain, he would follow his owner to work on a Caribbean slave ship. The ship is what he imagined, everything Doran had told him and teaches him was all correct. The ship was always busy, full of people and slaves, reminded of the bad picture of him a few years ago. It was large and covered with ropes, had a gigantic sail. The slaves to him was similar, hooked with metal neck chain and was tortured with tons of tools. Not forgetting that he is one of them.
Despite all of the torture and all of the things he had to do for the owner, he didn’t give up. He knew that this was the only chance of getting out. He started to trade glass for a cuple of years. This was hard for him because slaves are not suppose to start there own business, but Robert was a kind man so he gave him a chance to do right. After a couple of years, he had made 40 pounds, he put time, sweat, and heart into it, and this is it, this is his freedom. It was the happiest day of his life. Nothing can replace earning freedom as a slave.
For the love of his job, he continued he continue working on ships and boats, he felt very good he got out of that brick wall of pain. He was so happy he worked and worked and had earned a fair amount of money. More than he needed to survive. Life was good, despite the fact that he was far from his family, or didn’t know if they were alive or not, his life was fairly perfect.
Some happiness doesn’t last forever, one day on his routine of working on a different ship of course. The captain suddenly saw a well dressed black man on the deck, he had better plans. He planned to sell him, Equiano was confused and frustrated as ever. All of the hard work he had put into his job and his own freedom, GONE. He asked “ What right do you have to sell me?” Nothing came out of his mouth, without wasting a single second, he order his men to tie him around the ankles and wrist, and hang him up on the middle of the deck. He was in pain, just pain followed through his mind. Begging and crying of did not free him from the evil white men, not a single person cared.
The next morning people brought him down because he was blocking the sail. He was passed out by now. Some people think they should throw him off to shore. The captain agreed, he felt lucky once more to lift his spirit. After being thrown of he found another ship bound in Jamaica.
Enough is enough, Equiano thought strongly, this wasn’t the world we grew up in, the gods are angry and they want someone to do something about it. Equiano was encouraged and became a public speaker. He spoke to a lot of people and crowds and they were very inspired, that was his new job. He went back to British, bought a house and continued his work there. He speaks to crowds and had another idea in mind, writing a book. In 1789, he wrote a book about his journey to be what he is today called The Interesting Narrative of The Life of Olaudah Equiano. It became the bestselling book of the times. He was very proud.
The story ended when he passed away in 1797. He may have passed away but his spirit lives on. People were inspired to have meetings and wrote book about slavery and how it is going to stop. After 10 years of his death, Britain and America abolished slavery. He became well known in Britain and many countries of the world, how a slave can change the world.

Apple: Child Labor & Slave Labor
Posted by Manh Hung in Uncategorized on January 17, 2012
After reading this article, my trust on Apple product had gone down. I had some things I wanted to know and find more about and things I wanted to connect and relate to. One big things that surprised me were the graphs. The numbers were just very unexpected, for example the number of people practice slave labor is more than there is in each management places. There shouldn’t be any slave labor in any kind of way in any Apple Company, any where in the world because Apple was a huge company, it is popular world wide. Doing this would scare the customer away and less people will buy product, it will affect the whole brand.
“I would like to totally eliminate every case of underage employment,” I don’t think this is about age, I think this is about how well they know the code, and also having the skills to do what is right. They would think that younger people would know less, but eliminating them would give away less workers, and that’s harder to solve the problem. A suggestion might be helping learn the cold and stop child labor without firing anyone, this will give them a chance to do right.
Something I want to find more and learn about is how they deal with the problem.“As we go deeper into the supply chain, we found that age verification system isn’t sophisticated enough. This is something we feel very strongly about and we want to eliminate totally.” I think they are trying really hard to deal with it and not make the buyer think that Apple is a bad brand, I think they are trying very hard to persuade the buyer, and to do that, they’ll have to fix this problem of different age or changing the way they handle the product. Another fact that I want to learn about is the next couple of years, I know this fact I have to keep an eye out on the news, but what if this happens again. Some problem last for a long time. Some stops, then continues. I want to see the future of Chinese Apple Product.
There are a lot of things I learned in this article, but in general the one thing I thought was the most valuable was I think knowing the different options you can have to fix a problem. There many problem that you think” There is only one solution.” And the solution you made might not be the best, you have to know what right depending on the problem.

The story of Olaudah Euqiano
Posted by Manh Hung in Uncategorized on January 16, 2012
This article was great, I’ve been learning about slavery and it worked and this is one of the article that really helps me understand more about being a slave and how the slavery worked at the old times. There things I am shocked about and things that I can connect to. This person was one of the people that stopped slavery. This is hard to do and it takes a lot of skills and courage to do it, that’s what makes Quqiano so special, he have the courage to be the change he want to see.
“You must be the change you want to see in the world.” This famous quotes was written by Gandhi, one of the most famous people that made a huge change in the world. He believed that if you want the world to be a better place, you must be the solution to make the difference. This somehow connects to this article because Euqiano was captured and really didn’t have any education yet, he became a slave ans soon was bought by variety of owners. Then was bought by one owner that gave him education. How this connects to Gandhi’s quote is Equiano wanted slavery to stop so he learned and became an writer and a public speaker, he talked about how slave should stop and after 10 years of his death, Britain and American stopped slavery.
“The cargo hold was tiny— a person couldn’t even stand up in it. The air in the hold was hot and stale. The smell of sweaty bodies and human waste made the air even more unpleasant.” This surprised me because if I was in this situation, I don’t know if I am going to survive. Almost one thousand slave in one cargo, would be a very uncomfortable for you and everyone else. I am also surprised that when he came from a rich family, and had to fit himself through dirty and poor people, he had no problem with it.

China vs Britain: Compare and Contrast
Posted by Manh Hung in Uncategorized on January 15, 2012
The world at the times that slavery was still happening was a very hard time. People were disrespecting other people that are from different regions, people think if they are different, they are some kind of aliens.
China was the oldest civilization in the world. Slavery was also happening in the old times. Usually slavery would happen with different regions where one country would capture or interrogate a village or a small town, they would bring them back and they would become there slave. However, China even took there own people, the people that they think had low class and low ranked. The would turn them into slaves. This is different to the other country because they are taking there own people. This I think is an uncivilized act because you can at least respect you own people, we are living in a same country. Chinese use slaves as mostly government purposes, this helps them make money. They do house works and much more. This is different from Britain and also other countries is because slaves in other countries can’t earn there own money, they mostly be maids and just work without and full meal, or just get little amount of money from there owners.
Slavery were also happening in Britain, instead of enslaving there own people, the enslave other regions. Government was supporting slavery, this was an normal act in Britain and I was really surprised by this. China at the time of slavery, some went against slavery, one person in China Wang Mang had stood up and stopped slavery. This difference was big, one country is trying to support slavery, trying to make money out of buying people and making them turn into what is called an animal. And a country that also does support slavery, but in a different way, someone had felt that this is it and this is the limit that the slavery should go and actually stood up and did something. But as years go by, Britain people eventually saw that this wrong and had stopped slavery.
Slavery had occur in both countries, and both countries had attempted to stop it and succeed. Slavery can be very different in variety of places, either its the system, the owner’s authority and so on. But all of the slavery in world comes to and end, because slavery is never the right thing to do.

Devastating Slavery
Posted by Manh Hung in Uncategorized on January 11, 2012
When I read this article of slavery, some of the things I read had been similar to what I had read in the book, but the timeline really stands out to me because I can see time by time how slavery were like years and years. I was surprise by how cruel the punishment was and how people treated the slaves. I was also surprised how they can fit so many slaves in one ship, it would be incomparable for the slaves. To me slavery is unacceptable, everyone should respect everyone else and that’s just a first step of building civilization. While reading, I felt sorry for the slaves not just because they are always tortured, but they also are forced to learn a whole different religion. I think this could be very hard for them because they respect there religion and I think it would be hard to just leave the religion you grew up with and learn a foreign religion. But the benefits of learning Christian is after the 1700, all of them gets freedom and this is unfair for all the other slaves.
2. Do you think colonial life was hard? Why or why not? Explain with example from your notes and the article.
I think at that time of period in the colonial life, it would be very hard because the government were still allowing trading of slaves and everything wasn’t as settled as now. People were working without getting paid, according to my noted I took, when the slaves farm, they took the crops and gave to there owners and the reward and a piece of bread and this was really hard for slave people. Evryone would be scared of the government and eventually leave the place and have to do a lot of moving.
