Dancing with the wind
The branches are gently
Following the rhythm
The mountain raising his neck
To see this beautiful scenery
The clouds have come to see
The sun has come to see
However, the time has come
People passing by
Stepping on the flowers
Spitting on the ground
Kicking and punching the tree
The beautiful flowers ripped and crumbled on the ground
Crying with the wind.
The gardener would come and would say…
“The sun gives you warmth
The wind gives you coolness
The rain gives you water
What more do you guys need?
We need people’s smiles
We need people’s warmth
We need people’s respect
If we received these warmth, respects and smiles
We would’ve been already as big as a tree

It was chaos. I didn’t expect it to happen in my life. My house was on fire. It was 12 at night, and I was deep asleep. My mom was next to me as usual, and my little brother was in his room, sleeping. After a while, I started to smell something weird and I could feel my body warming up. First, I thought it was a part of my dream. It did smell like fire, but I never thought of waking up. I was sleeping, but the smell started to become stronger. I immediately ran out the room to see if anything was burning. The burning wasn’t only happening in the kitchen. It was happening all over the house. Right now, almost all the furnitures in the living room was in fire, and the fire was slowly spreading out.
I quickly ran inside my little brother’s room and saw him sweating in his bed. I held him up and took him to my room. I tried to wake my mom , but there was no response. Slowly, I placed my fingers on her nostrills to see if she was still breathing. She was not breathing. Even though I was surprised, I had to save my brother first. I held my brother’s hand and walked quickly toward the front door. However, we could not walk any further. The door was completely covered with fire. I slowly let go of my brother’s hand and confidently walked toward the door one step at a time. I could hear my brother shouting from the back.
“NO! I will not let you sacrifice yourself to save me!!”
Then, I saw him running past me. I could not stop him because I was in too much shock. In front of my eyes, I saw my brother kicking the door for me. His legs were of course on fire, and it was starting to cover him all up. I couldn’t say anything. I was pushed out the door by my little brother, and all I could do was stare at him outside of the house. He was smiling at me even with his body covered with fire. All I could think of was to go downstairs and ask for help. I ran downstairs as fast as I could, barefoot. The guard called the police for me, so all I could do was wait.. I was biting my fingernails. I was crying and I was running around to see if they have come. After a while, they came and started to run inside the building. Half an hour later, they all came downstairs exhausted. One of the fireman slowly nodded his head to me, which meant it was safe for me to go in the house now.
I ran upstairs. I could see my neighbors looking inside the house. The fire was completely down. I pushed my neighbors aside, and walked in. That’s when I saw my brother. His body was completely black, and his eyes were closed. I shook his body and I tried hitting his shoulders.I was screaming, I was crying out loud. They were all dead because of me.

It was a dark and stormy night. I was lying down on my bed alone. My mom has gone to work, my dad has gone to a business trip, and my sister went to a sleepover. I was alone, so I was a little scared.
“Angela, you are a 9th grader… How could you be scared?” I would tell myself.
Then, I decided to call my mom. I was not calling my mom because I was scared, but to check what time she was planning to come back.
“Briiinnnnggrrr..” She wasn’t picking up. I was about to hang up, but I heard her say something.
“Mom…? Is that you?” I asked in a very careful voice.
“Lullababy…” She replied with a quiet voice.
I thought I misunderstood what she said. Then, she started to sing lullababy to me. At first, I thought she was singing it for me, so I could go to bed. But, I was wrong. I could hear someone screaming, crying, and swearing in the background.
“Mom, weren’t you in the office? Where are you? Who is that with you??” My voice was louder, I was scared to think that my mom was in trouble and I was kind of scared.
I was shaking… I hardly had power to even keep my phone next to my head. All I could do is hang up. I softly touched the hang up button and slipped my phone out of my hand. I could hear my phone fall next to my bed. I was scared. I just wished someone was next to me right now, this second. I could feel sweat falling down my forehead, and the back of my pajamas was wet because of my sweat. Then, I thought about my sister. If I called her, maybe she would come back home.
“Sister, can you come home…? Umm… I have a…stomach ache. I’m too tired to move to find my medicine.” I had to think of a excuse in order to make my sister come back home.
“Do you know what time it is…? I…”
She couldn’t finish her sentence. I could hear the same screaming, and swearing in the background that I heard when I was talking to my mom. This made me more scared… Maybe, it’s a similar sound.
“…Sis…”
I was about to tell her to come quickly, but she hung up. I didn’t know what to do. Now, my hands were shaking badly, and now I was crying. Tears were endlessly falling down my face. From that time on, all I did was sit on my bed with my body shaking thinking of what to do. I couldn’t call my dad, because he was not in California. I was about to lay down and close my eyes, when I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. At first, I was smiling because I thought it was my sister running for me, but the footsteps were slowly coming up and it was not my sister’s step. My sister’s steps were much more faster, so then I thought it was my mom’s footsteps. But, it wasn’t my mom’s footsteps. My mom’s footsteps were much louder. I didn’t know who it was. It couldn’t be my dad’s footsteps. He definitely told me he would be back next week or so.
I was much more frightened. Then I ran inside my bathroom, and hid inside the bath tub. My bath tub had a curtain, so I thought I was safe in here. I was wrong. The footstep was now inside my room and coming toward the bathroom. The footstep was slowly coming toward the bathroom. Now, I had even stopped breathing, just in case. I couldn’t think of anything. Now, the footsteps stopped, and the bathroom door was slowly opening.
“GRRRIIIKKKKKK…” The door was half opened, and I saw someone come in. It was not a person, it was people. A group of people came in my bathroom. I was sure that there was only one person coming up the stairs, but in front of my curtain, I could see at least 10 shadows. I was scared… I immediately thought of horror movies. The ghost come up the stairs, opens the bathroom door, rip open the curtain, and eat me up, or stab me. I was thinking when all of the sudden, my curtains opened.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANGELA! WE LOVE YOU~!”
In front of me, I could see my whole family, and my friends. I couldn’t stop myself from laughing out loud. After I showered, I went down to the living room and heard the story.
“We did all this for you. Today is Halloween, and your birthday is also Halloween! We thought it would be fun and freaky to do a birthday party like this. At first, your mom and your dad strongly disagreed. They were truly worried to leave you alone in a big house like this, but they agreed at last. It was difficult to persuade them! Hahaha…. After you called your mom, we never knew you would call your sister. But then, you called your sister and she answered it. That moment, I accidently turned on the sound affect that was for your mom’s phone call. That’s why she had to hang up on you..”
“You know how scared I was..? I still can’t believe this was all a play. Oh well, it was quite an interesting birthday party. Thank you guys for coming and working so hard for my birthday. I will never forget this birthday party! Let’s have some cake.”
It was a bright and happy night.
