    The Accessible Media

On the top of your head, can you name all the stages of photosynthesis? The date of the storming of the Bastille in the French Revolution? Or what it is? What about the lyrics of a new Gaga hit, even? Yes? … No? … Google?

In olden times, it is usually mistaken that intelligence meant knowledge. At school, the “smart” ones were always the ones who memorized all the algebra equations, aced all the tests and remembered the periodic table of elements by heart; they were the ones with the Ivy League within reach and stood out in their classes, petted by teachers and students alike. But when put to the test, can these smart ones really put their knowledge to use?

    About Blogging

The excerpts you see on this blog originate on one of the 138 blogs currently in use. Each blog is from a grade 6 through 12 students many using English as their second language.

At SSIS we believe that blogging...

encourages students to talk about writing as a process. It helps them realize that texts are not perfect documents that we learn to spew out. It helps them learn that texts are always in the process of revision. They learn that even after they post their carefully proofread entry, someone will inevitably come along, ask questions, and force the writer to take another look at the work he or she has written. Of course, we all know that it doesn't take place with every text but, when it does happen, students learn what it really means to write. (K. Glogowski)
